Hi guys, I'm looking to compliment my HD650 with either one of the other two 'Big Three' higher-midrange headphones that is most different to it in terms of sonic signature.

The HD650 is well known to be sonically a dark, warm, lush, soft, weighty 'phone (which I have also found in my experience) - so out of the K701 and DT880 '05 edition which is the brighter, colder, drier, harder and airier? Ie. which one would offer the LEAST overlap with the Sennheisers?

What are the key differences between the K701 and the DT880 '05's?

And on a related note, is it possible for one headphone to have more bass impact and quantity than another headphone, yet still be considered the brighter and colder of the two? Sometimes I get my audio-descriptive terms confused on here.

(btw I'm amping with the Graham Slee Novo)

Thanks in advance for any replies!!

that's interesting, I've heard others say that the K701 splits the DT880 and HD650 down the middle.

It seems that the HD650 is definitely 'dark' but I've heard the other two described as both 'bright' and 'dark'

Only the older "dark" driver HD650s are dark IMO. The newer (a few years now) HD650s are anywhere as dark as the older ones.

All three are balanced headphones and you can't go wrong with any of them (except make sure if you go with the DT880s, it's the 600ohm version).

I would recommend one of these headphones and say a Grado or Denon for a fun contrast.

in response to your last query, i personally find the dt990 600 ohm version to sound brighter, with better bass quantity and impact than the sennheiser hd650 using my gear

the dt880 600 ohm is brighter sounding than the hd650, but the bass impact is much less, but still very ample for my needs...
