I noticed something very interesting about my AKG K601's the other day. Even though they are an open can, I can cover the openings directly behind the driver on both sides without the sound changing much. I have noticed that with both Grado's I have owned the sound changed dramatically with just holding your hand behind each cup (spaced away even as much as an inch from the back of the driver). If you tried to 'seal' the back with your hand, it would change to a mucky/horrid sound. The same was also true for my KSC35's, but not as 'violent' a change in the sound.

It seems strange that with my K601's I can try very hard to seal the drivers back opening and it does little to nothing to the sound. I can't figure out why this is. Unless their are openings from the back of the driver into the actual ear cup...or the entire housing isn't sealed up that well. Still I would have assumed being an open can it would have made a difference, but to my ears there is no change in sound...for the most part (I think it might cut down some of the highest frequencies just a tad...but it is hard to tell the difference.

How much do they leak? Too bad they're not easier to drive... what sexy portable cans they'd make.
