It's definitely worth it. And since you have the K701 as well, you can change pads to your liking

The more I listen the more impressed I am with the K601 pads. I imagine that for some music I'll miss the K701 pads (they really did well with the bass of the K500), but the K601 pads allow more detail (to be sure, the K701 pads allowed much detail as well) and the overall sound is just a bit clearer. The K701 pads added real weight to the sound, but I think I prefer it this way. I like the airy feeling and the great resolution

Would the K601's benefit from the 701 pads?

Yes, you will get a wider soundstage, and more body to the sound.
But the difference are marginal, and it could also be that my K601 pads are worn out, and the K701 pads brandnew.

I have the same impression with the K601 pads on my K-400.
The K701 pads (new ones), didn't do the trick as good as those K601 pads.
Regarding to weight, the K601 pads add more of it to the K-400, than the K701 pads do.
A pity though, I was hoping for new, untouched pads on my K-400, to replace the wornout K601 pads.
But alas, here you have a chance to buy brandnew K701 earpads, bought at Thomann. They came today.

The K601 pads turns the K-400 into real rock-cans. They give more weight, body and snap to the sound. Without losing those magic mids and the gorgious soundstage. The bass and highs are more articulated.
With the K701 pads, they sounded weird. Not the same as with the K601 pads or even with the original pads. Very hard to describe.
One thing was obvious, the K701 pads ruin the mids. They became recessed and hollow. The magic was gone. It all sounded too polite. No slam.
A pity, I really wanted those new pads to work, because I can't find new K601 pads for a reasonable price.

The K701 earpads are rather stiff.
And they are shaped for a good fit on your head.
Are the 501 pads too stiff for you, or too soft?

Too stiff. I'd prefer K501 pads to be a bit softer to make a better fit.
