I know this has been posted several before but I'd like to share my joy. My primary motivation for making this switch was comfort. I don't use my K701s much because those lumps (tumors?) on the headband are unbearable so why not put those comfy K701s pads to work and use them on my dearly loved K501s? Besides the substantial increase in comfort (and the colors match so they look like they're made for each other!) what really struck me is the radical improvement in the bass. I listen to classical music so thumping bass is rarely on the program but I think if K501s shipped with K701s pads few besides bass heads would complain about its lack of bass. I don't understand how this works but I read about it all the time with Grados so why not AKGs too? It makes enough of a difference for me to contact AKG asking about ordering two sets of K701 pads for my K501s. If you have both, try the switch, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

With 701 pads on both or 501 on both, the playing field is evened, and the 501 pulls ahead so much you have to wonder what's up with the 701...

The two have always been compared with their own pads, but if you look at the fundamentals- the driver units, the frame, the housing, you see the true winner.

I was gonna post about that very thing last night !!

The k501 with k701 pads sounds very similiar to the k701.
Except the k501 w/pads has a more euphoric and silky midrange, and slightly rolled of highs, more natural highs.

Anyone who is finding that there k701 in lacking dynamics and has a lot of brightness/siblance should switch.

ps: anyone with a k501 should spring for these pads, you pretty much get a
k701 for $40...

adanac that is a great composition!
From the perspective of the viewer, the 501's looks like it is standing tall, slightly bent backwards, looking up at the sky in victory.

Unlike K501 pads the K701 pads are thinner in the front and thicker in the rear or may be it's the other way around. In any case I neglected to check this before I made the switch so I assumed this to be true. If I'm wrong please correct me. The K701 pads have a very thin piece of black doughnut shaped foam that resides between it and the driver. I didn't include this when I made the switch so adding it may open up whole new worlds of further improvement. Making the switch is a very delicate affair requiring patience so make sure you check the location of the three little triangles that act as latches and note the direction you must turn the pad in order to engage these. It took me several tries using VERY gentle pressure but finally they snapped into place. You may think you’ve done this correctly because it seems you’ve engaged the latches when you really haven’t so GENTLY rotate the pad back and forth with very little pressure to confirm the pad is really seated and locked into place.

What sets K501 pads apart from K701s are these things: The K501 pad is made from relatively hard foam surrounded by some sort of mesh material and the doughnut doesn't vary in thickness. If your pads are velvet and and vary in thickness then they may just be color variants of K701 pads so making the switch may not make any difference. I've never seen K601 pads so this is just my naive opinion.

adanac061, it's obvious 636 additional posts makes all the difference in capturing sonic nuances. For me "the bass is better" is about all I could conjure up. DUH!
