K340: How power hungry are they?

I think all the K340 love here has finally gotten to me, as I've bitten on a sale of an used pair in pretty decent condition. I am just curious how power hungry they are. I currently have the PPX3 using the 6CG7 tubes, and I'm wondering if that can provide enough power to drive the K340.

I can't seem to find the specs for the K340, like impedance, SPL, or anything like that. So far I've heard nothing about good things about the K340 + Graham Slee Solo combo. If I decide I like the K340 enough, I might just build a rig around that.

But please, give me more information

i think the ppx3 6cg7 does a pretty good job powering the k340 since it's got a pretty high impedance, which seems better suited for the ppx3 than current hungry low-impedance phones, i.e. grados. though you need to turn up the pot considerably higher to reach the same volume level like for example senn 650.

btw k340 has 400 ohms and 88db/mw efficienty if i remember that right

You are correct sir.

Are you planning on sending them to Larry for the "Philodox Modds"?

400 Ohm, 94dB at 1mW.

Never heard a Graham Slee Solo so no idea how that would sound. I've heard the PPX3 Slam with the 5687 output tubes which was pretty good, but I don't think even that had quite enough power. I'm currently using a custom made amp with push-pull transformer output 6SN7's or 6BL7's, this and the Dynahi are the only combos I've heard to date that I feel have enough power to fully drive the K340's.

Well, I've heard them with the PPX SLAM and they sounded great. Definately enough power. Interesting note on the impedance, mine measure at 337ohms... not sure if that is standard or due to the recable or other mods.

EDIT: You're amp doesn't have enough gain for loud listeners like myself, but it certainly drives them well aerius.

I power mine with a maxxed out PPA with an outboard steps running a voltage of 28-30. It has plenty of power. Used to use a Dynalo, that also powered 'em well.

Man, those are pretty inefficient, but still, I'm very curious about the K340. Even if I don't like them, I think I can still get a pretty decent re-sale value from them. If I do end up liking them, then they'll definitely go to Larry's for the mods.

Will a M3 be enough to drive the K340's without sacrificing its true beauty?

not sure if M3 is enough to extract the last bit out of K340 but i feel my M3 drives my K340 fairly well even with the gain of 3 (i'm a low volume listener.) It fills in the bass quite nicely, compared to a pimeta. I think the rather warm signature of M3 is a good match for the vibrant mid/high of K340.

I actually had the change to hear a Slee Solo and an M3 back to back with a stock K340. That can just seemed dark with both amps, not really my preference. On the other hand, those amps sounded just groovy with the HP1000s I ran through them, so it's probably a personal signature preference and not an inability for these amps to drive this can.
