I was intrigued lately by mention of the new AKG K601/K701, but recently I've been thinking of skipping all the hype (and saving myself more than half the cost) and just getting the K240S and joining Team Groovalizer.

Descriptions I've read (dark, warm, sweet midrange, groovy, airy, good soundstage) have me drooling, these sound like cans I could REALLY enjoy, particularly for jazz & soul. But I wonder if it's worth waiting on the K601's to come out (presumably selling at ~$200) and see what reviews look like. Opinions?

Initially i thought the akg 240s is muddy but when i listened to it for a longer time , i realise why folks like them. Its grooving

To me, the K240S is a bit like an HD600 covered in molasses; syrupy, sweet, and slow. It sounds good with a few select acoustic folk songs that I've heard, but for most stuff it was just bleh. I'd take the HD555 over it any day, let alone the 580 or 600. And as far as goovalizers go, it is nothing like the DT531, which is much more clear and upfront, with taut bass, not flabby bass like the K240S.

For $80 USD shipped, I'd say it's an awesome sidekick can. You're going to buy the new AKGs anyways, face it

.

The lushest midrange I've ever experienced. (it was overwhelming at times!)

Compared to HD580, it has a bigger midbass hump, and less of the upper highs. It is more upfront in the midrange/upper midrange than HD580, and that is its main strength. I like the K240S much better than HD580 for rock or other aggressive music, but would take the HD580 over the K240S any day for classical, jazz, and other acoustic music because of the better detail and refinement. In my opinion, the HD650 beats both for all types of music, since it is less laid back than HD580 (so it does rock just fine), and yet much more refined and detailed than K240S.

I think you'd find that the k240s pairs nicely with your home-vibe. Go for it dude!

I agree that the akg k240s isn't amazing as the recent k701 inspired hype would suggest, but it has a very nice midrange and treble for the money with no major faults.

these headphones are well respected here. especially when sided with a go-vibe or PA2. i wish i had a chance to try these. but i dont think i could go back to supra-aural design.

With my K240S and a Go-Vibe (which I run at 18v), I have found a positive synergy with the AD823 opamp. With my other open phones (Grado SR225, AKG K501) I prefer other opamps. But, for the K240S, and one of Norm's bufferless "Vibe" amps, the AD823, to my ear, is a gorgeous fit. While I'm on the subject, I'll mention that using one of Jim Hess's Magwires Originals IC's with this setup had a special synergy as well. This setup gives what I would call a really beautiful listening experience across all musical genres.

. Even the more negative descriptions I've read haven't turned me off... they sound like a particular sort of euphony that's very seductive, particularly at the price-point of the k240s. Will definitely have a pair by early next month. Looking forward to listening to some vinyl with these cans.
