I can buy a K240, it`s a 600 ohm model don`t know which version it is. The ad doesnt mention that. But it`s only 40 euro.

Should I try these cans for the money?

Those would be the K240M/DF. I own the K240M as well as the K240S.

I see that you own the HD650. I suggest that you not even bother with the K240M...the DF are better though, I think you'd not like them compared to your Senns which are MUCH better.

What you need is the AKG 701

I have a pair of the K240M that I have used for years... While they do have a fairly decent sound for the price, I don't think you would give them much listening time if you have HD650s as an alternative... I also have the K701, and this is a completely different set of cans (much easier to drive than the K240M too). I honestly think if you want to try out the AKG sound, and you already have the Senn 650, you wont be happy with anything less than the K701.

I have the 240s and I never really got on with them. I found the sound closed in and very 'middly'. I suppose Rock music sounds ok on them but I never really took to them but then I tend to listen on better headphones more.

The K240M sound much different than the K240S. I like the K240S better and use them with my Zen Vision:M with EQ.I've never heard the K240DF.

The K240S do work best with rock imo...you just can't listen to them right after leaving a much better can. They obviously lack detail compared to my DT-880.

Yes, I tend to hover around sr225, senn650 and the Beyer DT770 and DT880 for different types of music/mood.

I just can't understand how the AKG240 was a studio monitoring phone. None of my engineers consider it at all useful for that purpose except to monitor how some people may hear a final mix.

I suppose it's just good value for money but I just couldn't get used to its sound.

Doesn't surprise me... IMO the Koss KTX-Pro1s with HD414 pads are an improvement on the K240S

I quite enjoy the K240s. Its too bad for them I aquired the holy grail of AKGness...

Nope, to my ears the headphones I mentioned (and by extension KSC-75) are better than the K240S. The latter has bass that walks on the mids sometimes (unforgivable sin), but I haven't heard the KTX-Pro1 w/414 pads ever do that. Also, K240S has dull treble and a closed-in feeling... Koss does not. Koss has better soundstaging too IMO. The only area I can think where the K240S wins is relative lack of grain in the highs... Koss are somewhat grainy.

Actually it's a shame that the 240s put me off the AKG's. I was considering the 501 or 601 but after the 240 experience .... nah.

I guess they just don't suit my hearing.

Well, some like it lean (K400, K501...), some like it more fleshy (K240S) - I've used the K501 for long, before it got somewhat boring. Nowadays, the K240S is more my cup of tea. Whereas I find fewtch's beloved DT880 just plain dull and lifeless.

Well, I'm sayin' nuttin' about that!!!

I can see the appeal in 240s but just not for me. I'm not saying anything about the 880's because I can feel the force.

The K240S sounds nothing at all like AKG's high end cans. It's like deciding not to get the HD600/650 because you didn't like the sound of the HD280 Pro... frankly, it doesn't make any sense.

Fair enough... if you prefer inaccurate "excitement" to hearing the music as it actually sounds, there's nothing wrong with that. It's not hi-fi, of course. I really wanted to like the K240S, but a headphone that imposes lower frequencies on the entire spectrum isn't going to be on my head.

It's unfortunate, but that is what sells to the main stream user. With a few tweaks, though, the headphone begins to sound acceptable. I do agree with you , though, the K240s does have a slightly different sound than the higher end AKG's although I wouldn't say they sound nothing like each other.
