I don't know what it is with these! Now mind you, they only have about 20 or so hours of pink noise burn in along with a few hours of music. But they just sound so damn good! Now I am by no means qualified to judge these cans vs. many others, as I have only owned the SR80's, RS2's and the HD650's. But I know what my ears like. and they like these, A LOT. When I put the Senns back on, It sounds like everything is a little "veiled" ( I even pulled the foam pads out and used nylon stockings to help brighten things up a bit). But with the Senns, it just seems like the music is coming from behind a curtain, and when I hear the JVC's, it's like the curtian has been lifted. Mind you, my 650's do have the Cardas cable upgrade, so we are not talking about a stock cable either. I cannot count the RS2's out because they simply clip out on the Woo 3 at higher volumes, but I did have the Xcan V3 for the RS2's and from what I can remember, they did not sound as well as the JVC's.

Now, other reviewers of the JVC's talked about it being very bass heavy, but I don't find that to be the case, it does go down low, but it's very clean in my ears, not bloated in the least. Of course that is most likely source dependent. Others have also called the mids colored and "odd" but again, to my unexperienced ears, the mids sound very nice. Soundstage is very deep but not as wide as the Senns, and possibly the RS2's, but not to a fault. So again, as of right now, these cans sound so amazing, and they are soooo comfortable and non fatiguing, that I cannot remove them from my dome!

I Have listened to a wide variety of music so far to test these out. To name a few; Buckethead, Audioslave, Rush, The new Genesis SACD box set (amazing quality) Stevie Ray Vaughn, Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium (which by the way has taken a beating for poor sound quality, but I find it excellent btw) I broke out some old Rush MFSL gold cd's that sounded great, Creed, Pink floyd, Sublime, Some old Iron Maiden remasters, King Crimson's Red in HDCD (awesome) just to name a few. So far nothing has sounded anything other than perfect. Anyways, thats my 17 cents so far!

Probably my next move.

I use my DAC1 to drive them balanced..Great synergy between the two.. But a 'real' balanced headphone amp should sound much better since it was configured just for headphones..The DAC1 XRL weren't meant to drive balanced headphones..More of a 'mod' or 'tweak'..

x2, especially with the Silver Dragon cable (I have no experience with Alex's HD650 cable). No veil, none, nada...just beautiful music.

But, I also agree at the wonderful sound of the JVC's. For me, the Sennheisers and JVC's are #1 and #1a, both with certain strengths and weaknesses (minor ones at that). You have two great cans!

BTW...anyone try the JVC's recabled and balanced?

......

Congratulations!
As for amp suggestions: the best amp I have found for them up to now is the Corda Prehead MKII SE. That will do you no good, 'cause it's not produced any more. I never heard the Opera.

I can't see you regreting your choice! Had them burning in today while I was work with Pink Noise, breaking in quite nicely! Everything starting to settle in now. Listened to Pink Floyds Momentary Lapse Of reason just now and I was hearing things I had never heard before, especially the opening ambeint track, with the water sounds. Always love getting a peice of equipment and going through the CD collection again! I put the HD650's back on and listened to that same track and it was no where near as detailed and crisp.

These, simply put, are some of the funkiest sounding headphones I've ever heard. Not bad, but definitely some of the funkiest. Their tone lent me to believe they'd do acoustic and perhaps some jazzy offerings quite well if their color was what you were after, but vocals were kind of creepy in how the midrange was scooped out. Not scooped out like Grado's or Audio Technica's, a totally different flavored scoop, but scooped nonetheless. Do any DX1000 owners concur with this?

I heard this when plugged into my Corda HA-2 MkII SE amp and I was seriously bummed because I didn't like them. But when the Opera arrived it was like the DX1000s were a different set of cans. The midrange funkiness was waaaay reduced and just left a slight coloration that is fun and interesting. There are songs that tend to hammer that midrange and take some getting used to but there are other songs that couldn't sound any better. These headphones definitely benefit from the proper amp. I thought that synergy crap was a lot of hooey until I heard it for myself but it's true.

JVC DX1000's really like tube amps best, IMO. This reduces the midrange coloration by the largest amount. I loved the JVC's with the Singlepower PPX3, and they sound very good with the ASL MG Head OTL III as well. I haven't really used them with my Opera, but the Opera seems to make everything sound good

Agreed.

(Off Topic)

Skylab - I miss your old avatar. It was one of the few that was as screwed up as mine.

Hardwired - do NOT change yours please.

After searching posts about these cans, I find two schools of thought about the mid-range SQ.
One group says they are great.
So I ordered a pair.
Another group says they are sorta "strange" -- but sorta nice anyway -- but the "nice" (or not-so-nice) depends on the right music at the moment.
So I canceled the order.
I guess I have to wait and see a few more posts, and make a final "buy/not buy" decision....
(Goes into wait-and-see mode)

Ooops, are you willing to trade them already? I know, only for a week but still ...... That can only mean that they are not very good - or that they are really good and you want more people to get the opportunity to listen to these.
