HI: I have a great head phone the grado SR-225 but I also have 2 home amps. So I thought that I would get the 890s for their huge sound stage and fun sound. I liked the huge sound-stage on the Cd3000 and thought that for 100.00 it might be fun to get the 890s. These will be just for fun and sound stage but if I need great sound I have my Sr-225 for that. Any body else enjoying the 890s? I will be using the headsave ULTRA with them and my MiniDisc deck.

I tested the 890s out briefly with my 15gb Euro-capped iPod at a local dept. store. In a head to head test with the Sony cd580 - the 890 stomped it into the ground and had it for dinner. Other than sounding a tad underdriven (the ipod is Euro-capped after all), and a tad unbroken-in, results were surprisingly favorable.

HI: I had the 890s a while back and really liked them but at the time i was looking for that one great can and found the senn. 580s so sold the 890s. I remember the 890s had a Hugh sound-stage and had great bass and were fun to listen to. I also remember even though they are 32 ohms I think that because of their 50 mm size that they needed almost as much power as my 580s. I feel that my ULTRA meta42 will have plenty of power fore the 890s and am not buying the 890s as my main cans but as my fun change off cans when I would like a Hugh sound-stage and fun sound that I don't have to concentrate on the music like my grado SR-225 but just listen to as in relaxing and fun sound. I also remember saying that the 890s had the biggest sound-stage that I ever heard. Now I have had the CD3000 that are as big as the 890s but cost almost 4 times the price but also has a Hugh sound-stage but were much easier to power for some reason or maybe it was the amp at the time. So heres to a fun sound fore a little more than 100.00.

HI: The DR7 was taking way to long to ship so I canceled it. I am glad I did because my 610 works just fine.

The HP890 bass is very wooly, out of focus compared to what you have / had Lou, you'll really be taking a step backwards with these...

...if soundstage is what you're after, then I guess its up to the AKG K1000s to wow you now

HI: A step back-wards? I have my SR-225. The 890 are fore fun and sound stage with a good amp. I just would like a fun can with a HUGH sound that are fun to listen to. If I want great I just get my SR-225 and there it is. If I remember the 890s were a lot of fun to listen to and I enjoyed the bass. It is not as accurate as my 225 but these are just an extra mess around can. I bet you have a few mess around cans that are not as good as your main stuff but still fun to listen to now and then. I need an other can for one of my two amps and am very happy with my SR-225 as my main can.

hmm... i dont really my hp890's that much, i much prefer my ms1. also havent listened very much with the hp890 with the ra1 clone i made.... mainly because the amp didnt seem to do anything for them... i think it actually made them worse because it didnt seem to drive them any better, but because of the bass rolloff of the amp the bass became very slightly less prominent but seemingly tighter. and this less bass just seemed to emphasize a hollow sounding they have to me... i concluded quite oppositely to you guys that the hp890's are easy to drive, because that same amp improved the bass quality and quantity of the ms1's, which i took to be harder to drive than the philips...

still love the soundstage (although its pretty 1 dimensional - like the sound comes either from the far left, centre or far right).
but to me this headphone still sounds slightly like all the singers have blocked noses

and thats not good

would love to see how the cd3k's compared to the philips though... i always imagined a properly driven cd3k to be sorta in between the philips and the grados, with bass and soundstage similar to the philips but with better quality mids and highs like my grados (ok alessandros)...
