Alright, I just purchased my first amp, a Portaphile P2v2 maxxed. Also order a udioline out x5 silver dock to use with my ipod...Can someone let me know how to hook this up and control it (like I said, its all new to me). What else do I need?

Do i control the headphone volume via the ipod, or the amp gain? Do the headphones still go into the ipod or do they go into the amp (please have patience with me).

thanks a million

The standard way to hook up an amp would be to get a mini to mini or 1/4 to 1/4 interconnect depending on your source, and connect the two. Then plug your headphones into the amp. Volume on the ipod should be about 50-60%, and you then should control the volume via the amp. Volume on the ipod does not change when you change it on the amp.

Normally, the best way is to use a dock to get at the line out of the ipod. It sounds to me like "udioline out x5 silver dock" is such a beast. If not, I recommend that you get one. Using the line out bypasses the Ipod's amplifier and volume control. Whether you use a dock or not, it works best to use the amplifier's volume.

Hi,

By "udioline out x5 silver dock", do you mean the AudioLineOut X5 Silver Dock?

If so, you made a bad mistake. Return the AudioLineOut X5 Silver dock. It's supposed to be used for the Cowon X5 portable player and not the iPod.

You want to buy a dock made for the iPod. AudioLineOut does sell many other docks made for the iPod.

To connect:
Plug the AudioLineOut dock into your iPod's dock port. (The port at the bottom of your iPod.) Plug the other end of the dock into your portable amplifier. Plug your headphones into your amplifier. Control the volume using the amplifier since the AudioLineOut dock will disable the volume control on the iPod.

Thanks for the help all. I did screw up and ordered the wrong lineout dock (I didn't even know what an X5 was and thought it was the name of the cable!!)

Where can I get a lineout dock to use in the interim while I deal with the return and correct cable? Do they sell them at any electonic stores, etc? Can anyone recomment one..

Thanks again.

Also, anyone reccommend a good case for my amp (portable)

See 2 pics below. Can't be easier. It's not a matter of "best to" control volume, iPod 's volume control will not work for line out -- only amp's volume control works.

You can actually see the music coursing through the glowing iPod & Silver LineoutDock!!!

A little bit off topic, but I was wondering, what effect did you use to get the golden glow? (I'm assuming you used PS?

Nope (tho' I do a lot of retouching at work). Just played around with available light, flash with diffuser, bounced flash and camera settings until something looked right. Shot many so don't know what settings. (Canon EOS Digital Rebel 6mpx 18-55zoom)
