So im a bit of an audiophile noob, I've recently had a pair of Panasonic HJE-70's and they've been fine until recently the left ear shorted out. So I did some research and I ordered me a pair of Ultimate Ears SuperFi.3's in clear. Good choice? Another reason I was making this thread is I've heard on other boards mentioned they use UE's with westone cable's. Do they just buy the Westone replacement cables? Does it make a big difference? Also this is all getting pushed by a 5th gen iPod video with no amp.

I just bought those headphones for my smaller brother. I don't think anyone would call them premium headphones, ety 4p's can obviously do much more with single drivers but the also slap you in regards to your wallet. You do get good support with all the super.fi line, but unless you recieved the live edition you are missing the cleaning tool which is worth having.

About the Westone cables, I am placing an order to get them for my super.fi 5 pros. I have had three cables now from UE and the latest are getting beaten up, but they have improved a great deal in build quality in the recent year. I would not recommend the Westone cable to you until you at all until you need a replacement. The sound difference in your deluxe headphones will be negligible considering you spent half the price your headphones cost to replace what isn't broken. You may still decide you want them, but from my experience with UE tech support, if your cables go bad anytime soon they will replace them. Maybe even with a free t-shirt. That'll be good enough for me to insure that my brother sticks with the stock and saves the $35 he would have spent on cables, not to mention support in case those break and need replacing.

I also had the Panny HJE-70"s (as well as the HJE-50). They are good sounding headphones but never caught on in the US despite the metal housing. The cables did seem a bit frail but did not fail on mine.

The UE's are a single armature and are different than the Panasonic dynamic driver. At the current Amazon price, the UE 3's are a good deal and will have adequate power from the Nano given their efficiency.

Actually the sound difference is not negligible. Ask the people who have done it. The added sound, comfort, durability and less microphonics make it one of my best purchases.

The ER4p may do more but once you switch cables that goes out the window. I had the ETY 4p with the S cable and the SF3 with ES and the same S cable. The ER4S loses to the UE in almost every area except isolation and speed(which is a tie). It beats its big brother(TF.10) also but so did the Ety IMO.

I've had the 3 twice, the 5 pro, and the Triple.fi and all came with the cleaning tool and metal case. The only thing the live has extra is the airline adapter. unless you mean the Ety which does not need a cleaning tool.

Back to the OP's query. It is a good choice as it has potential to unlock. I found the 3 very good stock but it can be harsh unamped. That depends on your sources though. If you Rockbox the Ipod you should find it very nice. If you find you really like it(it has more forward mids and a bit more seperation than the other UE's) it might be better to improve it than buying another phone.
