Ok, so I'm walking around town and I see this electronics store in tourist country with a bunch of cd players, way down in the cabinet's this dusty box with torn edges with a picture of what looked like a 777/900/905 on it. So I ask to look at it and sure enough it's an E905.
Still had the original price tag on it but apparently it was a display model and was missing the cheap cloth bag and most importantly didn't have the internal rechargable batteries but that's not a problem cause I can use the ones from my EJ01. So the guy gives it to me for half off and I just snagged it.
As soon as the batteries finish charging, I'll take a listen and see how thing is.
Anyway, the thing about this is that the remote has that micro plug and i'm not too fond of the headphones that it comes with. Does anyone know what kind of adapter this thing needs? Thanks.

ArcTeryx,

Congratulation on a rare find! Do you like the sound quality? About the micro to adaptor plug, I believe you need the PC-MP1S Mini to Micro Adaptor. You can find it

here, at amazon.com

usc goose,
Before 1995, all Sony Discmen, MDs, and cassette walkmans that equiped with remote has the micro jack terminated at the remote. You need the Sony PC-MP1S Plug Adaptors in order to use the regular headphones w/ the remote.

Thanks Purk, I'll go pick up one of those adapters as soon as I'm in the green, the E905 sucked me dry for the month.
BTW: I think last year I sold you a pair of HD590's for dirt cheap,
how are u liking those?

I charged the E905 and popped in a couple of works from Beethoven for a quick test. Compared to the D-EJ01 and FJ210, the E905's awesome on a pair of PX200's.

The DE-J01 just sounds weak, I had to set the volume to 60% to get some decent volume in a quiet room out of these. And a lot of the instruments sound like they were being played in a bath of mud, not clear, not distinct, and definitely lifeless.

The FJ210, one of the newer sony cd players introducted this year, is much louder. I left g-protection on since the DE-J01 has it on by default. The sound is very loud out of this one, I only had to set the volume to 30% to get the same volume out. But once again, same problem as the DE-J01, dull and lifeless. Except very loud dull lifeless music. While the volume definitely helps, it still wasn't too clear.

Now that I have the E905, this thing's awesome. In terms of pure SPL, I get the same volume as the other 2 by setting the sound somewhere halfway at 40-50%. The sound stage is definitely there and its presence felt, every individual note had energy to it, unlike the other 2. On the E905, the sound is live, I can actually close my eyes and hear where each and every instrument is.

All in all, I'm very happy with this cd player despite the fact that for practical use, it doesn't have the things that I've become accustomed to such as controls on the unit or a display but overall, the sound quality is unbelievable out of the headphone out.

The Microplug's this thing that looks like the stinger on a bee's butt, it blows, can't use regular phones out of the remote.

Anyway I haven't rock or alpined in a long while now that I'm a corporate whore.

and was missing the cheap cloth bag

IMO, that cloth bag is the best thing about the 905. I may sell my 905 someday, but I will not include that bag. I will never sell that bag. Ever.

What was the bag like?
I've had a couple of kinds, one of them's a rather thick bag that's made of what feels like felt, the other one's kinda thin, like a napped sheet of cloth.
I was under the impression that it was more of the latter, if not, then I guess I stand corrected.

It's gray. Some kind of fleece-like material on the outside bound to a thin finely woven polyester cloth on the inside. The feel of the bag overall is like something you might want to clean your sunglasses with and then slide them right in after, confident that they won't be scratched. The D-321 slides smoothly right into it. After which I tighten the drawstrings, securing the bag, protecting it from particulates, light rain, and light shocks. My belt clip secures right through it. It's the best system I've ever had for protecting a PCDP. The only improvement would be a soft chamois interior and a thicker padded chamois exterior with water resistant coatings.

That's cool, see the reason why I don't like to use those is cause it really doesn't do much to protect the cd player when I throw it in my backpack. It protects against scratches but that's about it.

I know what kind of pouch you're talking about though and I have a faux-leather one from Aiwa that's slightly bigger by about maybe 1/4" on each side. It does seem to work pretty well, prevents scratches and does pad it a little...

How many people use it w/o a case?
I have a neoprene skin tight case that fits the 905 but I use that when I put it in my bag, it zips completely close so I don't have access to the buttons. I plan to just hold it in my hand normally when I use it and only store it in the case when I shove it in my bag.

ArcTeryx,
I don't use the supplied cloth; however, I use the one from D-777 instead. The lid of the D-E900 is prone to scracth, so please be warned. I'm sure that you will enjoy this awesome Discman. I have excellent result on D-E900 w/ CD3000. Awesome details and soundstage.

How much did it cost you? And is it in mint condition even though some accessories ain't included?

Anyway, congrats! I also bumped into my D-777 in an electronic grocery shop by chance.

It was in mint condition, completely scratch free, everything seemed to be in new condition cause it was an internal display model behind glass.
It came with the unit, ac adapter, remote, headphones, and no batteries or carrying case.
The sound out of this baby's amazing, completely blows away any and everything I have.
I'm gonna keep my eyes open when I'm in these old electronics shops. I scored a pair of these incredibly old school aiwa ear buds for 20 bucks once at this electronics place near my house that's been around for about 15 years. Price was marked $90 originally, supposedly had some kind of diamond diaphram or whatnot, sound incredible, too bad I lost them not too long ago.
What kind of head gear do you use your player with?
I wonder how a HD600 would sound paried with the 905. They both have the same marble carbon fibre finish and would look incredible together.

I use my Grados with my D-777. Very nice combo for my music preference(rock, electronica). :p

I think the E905 can't push a pair of HD600(maybe, but definitely not good enough) on its own. If you want to use HD600 with it, you should get a decent amp. See the Amplification forum for more info about a good amp for HD600.

Well actually I think you should rather try CD3000 with E905 instead, purk and Tina both claim CD3000 and E905 have "Sony Synegy" with each other.

P.S. Damn it I really want to audition E905 to see the difference between it and 777

BTW: I paid $190 for them.
Also, does anyone know any place online where I can get cheap OEM gumstick batteries?

I'm probably going to stick with my senn. px200's till I get some $$ again. Even through these, the E905 sounds amazing. I haven't heard music with so much energy in it since back in the day when I had those aiwa headphones and the aiwa walkman.
