Although I don't have the specs for iBuds, it is probably due to headphone efficiency. A headphone efficiency is a measure of headphone efficiency in dBs SPL per milliwatt of input. A low number means that the headphones need more power to sound as loud as those which have a higher sensitivity. My guess is larger Grado requires more power to sound same volume level to be as loud as smaller and probably more efficient iBuds.
I received my SR80's a couple of days ago and they are very good headphones. I'm not sure what type of music you like but if you feel they are lacking bass do the basshead mod, you won't be disappointed and it's easy.
Just a quick question, as I'm considering picking up a pair of SR-80s tonight. Where do you read about these mods? Is there an archive thread of them or something?
but yea the sr80's are awesome.. i can't seem to listen to my other phones anymore. I wish i could bring them with me anywhere.. but it just isn't portable
I also have Grado SR80 but now I have the yellow Senn pads on them. I really like them but I now start to wonder what other headphones might sound like... I guess this is how you start your headphone collection...humm Also, maybe somebody could give me an advice about SR80. Should I sell it and upgrade to a different headphone ?
I think i too was a basshead.. then i found out my other phones didn't have that grado clarity.
Try the basshead mod on the sr80's. IMO electrical tape works the best. Here's a tip. Use scotch tape first then apply the electrical tape over the scotch tape. It prevents the stickyness of the electrical tape if you plan to remove the tape.
OR/AND
Get 414 pads.. added comfort with more bass. Reverse quarter mod if needed.
Also... if your grado's are new..burning/breaking them in would provide better Sound quality. Though this isn't proven. It's most likely that your ears get more accustomed to the grado sound.
I give it a week for your ears to adjust and that bass you've been craving will disappear.
x2 on the 414 pads and mods or try Todd flats but they are expensive. Grados sound signature can be addicting, love em or hate em, you decide. Good luck and enjoy your 80's.
