ok, i just got a dac1 for my computer. Im using av-710 with a tosslink glass ic to the dac and then zu rca ic's connected to my melos sha-1. do i turn the volume al the way on the dac and adjust the volume from thier on my tube amp or should i set it mid way on the dac1 and adjust volume accordingly?

All i know is this dac1 made my set up sound so GREAT. Its in the middle right now and gosh can it sing. It made the high's clearer and made the bass very tight. It makes beautiful low midrange music and it realy does feel like some 1 has lifted the curtain to my music. As we speek im listening to rage against the machines with my hp-2's. THANKS GUYS

Set the switch on the back to calibrated mode (which makes the DAC1 function as a DAC only, and shuts off the amplifier circuits). This is so you aren't double-amping with your Melos.

I would love to hear your gear.

Yes, yet another DAC-1 follower. I would say volume depends solely on which unit you want to alter the sound most. Think of it as you would an equalizer, and adjust to the right amount of volume for each of them. Do it with your ear, not by the position of the volume pot. Have fun and enjoy your DAC-1

I have found that my DAC1 sounds slightly better when run in calibrated mode. However, this has a serious tradeoff, because in that mode the signal is so strong that my amplifier's stepped attenuator gives me volume levels that are too high after only 5 clicks.

I've tried using the attenuator jumpers in the DAC1, which helped the problem of course, but they seem to degrade the sound quality a bit (so mine are at 0db).

When I just can't find a volume level I'm comfortable with I switch the DAC1 back to Variable output and use its volume control (trying to keep the volume control near the 12 o'clock position, which I've read is best).
