Welcome to HeadFi- Sorry about your wallet.
So True- I started with an amp/headphone setup (LaRocco PPA+650's) and I now have moved on to reassembling my HiFi system.
The ProAc Super Tablette speakers were dusted off (unused for 10 years) and a trip was made to the local store. After two audition sessions (the last one over 4 hours-talk about customer service) my new system is on order.
I CANNOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IN SOURCE COMPONENTS !! It is incredible the change which occurs as you move up the price scale. I was getting skeptical about all this "hi end" equipment however now I am a believer. I HEARD the difference myself.
The final results: A Rega P3 turntable (won out over the Music Hall's) and a Linn Genko CD player (over the Arcam FMJ and the Rega Planet). The source is an economical Arcam 65Plus- a great value which drove my ProAc's effortlessly.
I followed the philosophy of spending more on the sources - if the source is bad all the amplification in the world will do no good.
Now I probably should stop reading these forums and give my wallet a rest!
