Well, the wifes old car actually. We decided to donate it to a local charity instead of selling it, it'll help out some needy children. It'll give us a tax write off of about $800, which I may not bother with.

Anyone else donate any vehicles? The tow guy said they just turn around and sell them, and that the tow company picks up 50% of the sale for tow fee's!

We actually just talked about car donations the other day in our income taxation class. The plaintiffs contended that they were allowed a deduction of $2600. After computing the costs to the charity and whatnot, the actual write off was only $38.

No offense but the car could have been given for a nice price to someone in univ/school like me. I could use a car and I would have been glad to give you $$$ to donate to the charity. Two birds in one stone.

They will probably get very little money for the car...something someone like me could have used for 2 years of university education to get to the grocery store and back.

I am all for charity - in the form of something they can use. And a car doesnt fit my list of "To Donate" items.

I applaud your gesture - I am just telling you what I would have done in that situation. There are kids who walk 6 miles to buy groceries and carry them back in their backpack. I know because I was doing this for 1.5 years until I bought my bicycle.

I suppose I could have done that, except that I don't know anyone that needs a car, and I did ask around before I donated it, it's been sitting outside for 3 months. I would have gladly given it to you, but you're in Florida, and I'm in California.

Its no use to me now. I am done with univ...graduation ceremony in a week's time

but think of us students once in a while...I wont forget what I went through the last 2.5 years...If the opportunity to help a student arises...I will take it and do whatever I can.

I dont want to sound "bad" but I would rather help people who will pull up the economy and reduce the number of people who need help through charities. I will, of course, contribute to charity and I still think it is a noble and justified cause...I just feel that our duty to future generations needs a re-work.

Dont want to offend anyone here. I am all for charity and I applaud what some of you people do.

Bravo

I gave it to these people:

www.kidshome.org

I wanted to help local abused children, these kids are lucky to have a roof over their heads, and food in their stomachs. I'm sure most of them just look forward to tomorrow, and aren't thinking about college yet. I'm a college student myself, and I'm not sure I follow your line of thinking here.

As a previous college student who is continuing to sleep through grad classes right now while working, thanks for donating to people who probably both need and deserve it.

My mom organizes a charity for poor med students overseas. Obviously not all students are poor though especially in the states. Some just happen to live a little more thriftly as their parents limit funding in hopes that they can learn to be responsible and prioritize spending, and not all do. And others can only dream to be that priviledged.

Never again in California.

My wife donated hers a few years ago to a charity called "Cars4Causes".

Well, we got a nasty surprise a year later getting nasty letters from the DMV about the overdue tickets and that the car was impounded. Well, turns out the recipient of her car decided not to register it, so what does the DMV do? They go after the last listed owner. It took a couple angry phone calls to the DMV and Cars4Causes to get it all cleared up.

Wow, I hope that isn't going to be a problem for us! I just mailed the DMV transfer paperwork today.

My wife and I donated her car after we got married. It was a great tax write off, got to help out a good cause, and I didn't have to hassel with selling it. Guru.... With that kind of hi-fi equipment you had to walk?
