Yes, I am aware of the advantages of SACDs, but was just curious as to why most are multi-channel recordings when the majority of users will only use the two channel track.

Well, that's one of the promises of SACD. Let's be honest: most users do not really care much about the fidelity of their music. But surround sound? That's a whole other matter.

I've read where to hear SACD you HAVE to use the 5.1 or 6.1 outputs (they don't output sound to the regular RCA 2 channel plugs). is this true with all SACD players? do you NEED a DTS decoder?

Using the seperate left and right channel rca outputs on your SACD player will give you the 2 channel track of multichannel SACDs. To use the multichannel track you need to use the 5.1 outputs of the SACD player (outputs an analog signal) and connect them either to the 5.1 analog inputs on your reciever or straight to an amplifier. No decoder of any kind is needed as all the decoding and D/A conversions are done in the SACD player.
