I was travelling in Japan and came across the STAX SR-001 Mk2 headphones at Yamagiwa store in Akihabara (a great store - has full range of STAX, Beyer, Senns, AKG, Sony, AT etc).
Cost me US$200 which I thought was good value since it is a poratble in the ear headphone with its own headamp. Also, its an electrostatic and my very first stat headphone.
Sound is unlike any portable headphone I have heard (caveat - I have not heard Ety's though). The bass is very extended with lush mids. Highs are recessed but for the type of music I listen to, mainly Jazz, this is fine for me. Sounds very good for stringed instruments - Cello, Violin, Guitar.
I prefer it to my Senn PX-200 overall.
Isolation is better than earbuds but not as good as PX-200.
Comfort takes some getting use to. I found that changing the silicon pads to small for my left ear and large for right ear works best. Also, you have to twist them around a bit to find best fit and sound.
So far I have only been using them with my portable CD player. When I get back home, I can do a more thorough comparison using my home setup.
At the moment, I am very happy with them. Anyone else who have experience with these headphones. There is a nice review by Driftwood but I am surprised by the lack of attention these headphones get in Head-Fi. To get an equivalent sound on portable headphones you will have to spend much more on other portable headamp alone (Porta Corda or Headroom)
