Haven't taken SATs and don't plan to if possible. Most colleges now except either/or SAT/ACT, and I'll choose ACT, thankyouverymuch. I've taken it once so far, and with minimal studying (Cliff's Notes the night before, mainly...) I got a 28. (out of 36) I'm trying to get into M.I.T., though, so I need about a 34 (

) or so, or else have something that catches the admission officer's eye on my application.

I'm not sure what the high school climate is like now but only a few years ago we were strongly recommended *not* to take the ACT, that the SAT is the better test and that the ACT was only used by "midwesterners." Don't ask me, just quoting a former teacher.

Anyways, is there any type of expectation still around about this for most colleges?

Most collages care about SAT.

Not to my knowledge... I've talked with UNL (admittedly, midwest...), UNC, MIT, Purdue, LeTourneau, etc., and all of them accepted the ACT no problem. In fact, one of them (can't remember which) told me the ACT was phasing out the SAT. I can't see that happening, but 'tis what they claimed.

There was no time gap. I basically walked out of undergraduate graduation onto the plane for the US. Everything was planned well before my undergrad finals. I had a hold on registration in the USA until my final results came out

I was here already...when my undergrad finals scores came out

I had to choose with $$$ in mind. I had the following admits :-

* UCLA
* Drexel University
* Virginia Tech
* USF
* SUNY SB

couldnt afford anything...even USF was too pricey then and nobody was handing out financial aid - things were tight after Sept 11th. I came to FL and it was probably the worst decision ever considering that the military HQ was Jeb Bush's government

He cut academic funding to fund military projects and we basically paid for the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

Whatever

Im here, graduating and looking for work

Most schools, and nearly all major ones take both. More schools take the SAT then the ACT, if they only take one. One of those colleges may have been referring to the fact that the SAT is changing its format, I doubt they have any intention of phasing it out, considering they finished agreeing on the new standard. And yes, it's true that more eastern schools prefer the SAT and more western schools prefer the ACT.

Since everyone here is super-smart and does really well on their SATs, I'll bring up the rear with a couple personal statistics.

* I've never taken the SAT, but I can barely add 2 + 2. I can't do basic fractional math to halve recipes, for instance.

* I'm a terrible, terrible student. I'm the laziest person in existence.

* I lack drive and ambition.

* I'm a generally talentless individual.

Seriously, aren't there any more loser procrastinating slackers on this forum? Oh, wait... no. Everyone on Head-Fi is Asian.

Junior/Senior. I'm homeschooled, so I'm sort of in between. If I wanted to, I could graduate this year, put it that way. I'm going to take some dual-enrollment college courses, though, methinks.

I am no genius. I am not a hardworking student either. I am just as lazy and I procastinate like crazy.

However - when I know that it is do or die...I usually wake up and DO what needs to be done. I can delve into my resources and come up with a performance that usually leaves everyone stunned.

Example :- 3rd semester of my undergrad program - final exams - passing score is 45/100 -> I made 45 in five out of the 8 exams

Can you imagine coming that close to failing!?!?!? I just didnt study...mental block and a "i'll face whatever the ****** happens" attitude. Come final year, 7th semester, I was the only guy with multiple admits to US universities, 4 Job offers from local companies, several interviews on the cards, the phone numbers of most of the chicks in college and I was playing tennis with an ATP pro
cool.gif

All because I near aced the GRE and therefore did well on all the aptitude tests that the companies make you take to qualify for the interviews (all the tests were made in the same format of the GRE).

Kick butt when you have to - relax the rest of the time. I dont recommend this but so far it has worked for me. I am not a motivated person until something really gets me fired up intellectually/physically.

Thats why I need a job where the work is challenging and requires constant adaptation. This is why I love racing and did it professionally. I need change to shine...change leaves the competition struggling and gives me the opportunity to leave them behind

What's the meaning of nerd?

Dec 5, 2004 at 5:33 AM Post #30 of 78
Main Entry: nerd
Pronunciation: 'n&rd
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps from nerd, a creature in the children's book If I Ran the Zoo (1950) by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)
: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits
<computer nerds>

Pinkie, SAT originally stood for Scholastic Aptitude Test, Scholastic Achievement Test, Scholastic Assessment Test, or Standard Aptitude Test, depending on who you talk to. Now, it doesn't stand for anything, AFAIK. It's just 'SAT'. Basically, a college entrance exam.
