Hello everyone, I've been looking at this forum for a long time but just registered.. I just need a little bit of help..

I'm looking for a new mp3 player since my 5.5 gen Ipod broke (the battery died). Now I'm looking for something which keep track of playcount and syncs it to the computer when I connect them, just like the ipod and iTunes. This is important for me, since I make playlists based on this information.. My plan is to drop iTunes (long story), that's why I'm not considering a new iPod...

I was planning on getting a Sony 818 I think it's called, but found out that it dosn't keep track of playcount.. But I've heard it play and the sound is VERY good...

So if anyone know about a player which syncs playcount back to the computer, please let me know....

I'm not aware of any player on the market that does that BUT itunes/ipod.

Why do you want to keep track of play-count?

(Seriously wondering, because that's not something most people require in their DAP).

TrekStor vibez (not flash though, 1" micro-drive) does this as long as you use MTP and Windows Media Player for syncing. I'd venture a guess that other MTP players do, too, I just don't know which ones.

Replacing the iPod battery isnt terribly difficult, I did it on my 5G, it cost me $10 including shipping for the battery and the tools to take the back off. If you insist on replacing the iPod and it is only the battery that is broken I will give you a few quid for it.

Hey All, and thanks for your replys... Just to answer a couple of your questions... I'd like to keep track of playcount, so I can create playlists on that information. Other than that, I just like to create statistics on what I listen to. I'm proberbly the only one, but still...

I mainly want to replace my iPod, because I'm looking for a smaller DAP.. Maybe I'll look into replacing the battery, but I still need a smaller player...

And by the way.. Any recommendations on what software to use playing music on the computer ?? Other that iTunes which is getting on my nerves (I have a Windows XP)....

Interesting conundrum. Believe it or not, I've been using WMP 11 to playback so that playcounts incremented there are reflected on my vibez on the next sync. Ditto ratings. Overall I kinda like WMP11, but the lack of gapless playback for anything not WMA bugs the hell out of me.

If it weren't for syncing aspect of it, I'd stick with the other players listed: Foobar, WinAmp, Media Monkey, etc.

Hey Ruben...

Yeah, I know what you mean.. I actually like WMP11 aswell. I think that vers. 11 is the first WMP that I like.. And I just love how it looks.. (Not important, but still).. I don't mind the lack of gapless playback, because I allways have crossfade on anyways, and allways forget to turn it off... I know it's not very popular around here, but I think that WMP11 is very good.. Much much better than iTunes7 (I haven't tried earlier versions of iTunes)..

But still, it's definitely not perfect in any way....

FYI, here is some info from the WMP11 help file on what information is exchanged during an MTP sync:

Quote:

Play count
Specifies the number of times a file was played, both in the Player and on the device. The play count is updated in your library and on your device during sync. If the file is protected with media usage rights that specify a limit to the number of times the file can be played, the updated play count is used to determine if the limit has been reached. In addition, auto playlists in your library that have criteria based upon play count are updated with the play count, and auto-ratings, which change based upon the number of times an item is played, are also updated.

Time
Identifies the time a file was last played on the device, so that the auto playlists in your library that have criteria based upon the time when files are played are updated appropriately.

Ratings
Updates ratings information for files in your library if you changed the rating for the file on the device. Your device must support the ability to change ratings. The auto playlists in your library that have criteria based upon ratings are updated appropriately.

Of course, this assumes the device is tracking this info in the first place. With the vibez, for some reason only Play Count and Ratings sync from WMP11 to the vibez. All three successfully sync back from vibez to WMP11.
