Hey any head fi-ers own the jolida jd 100 if you do have you changed the tubes? I own this player right now and i am enjoying the smooth sound but i have been thinking about upgrading. So i am wondering what are some good tubes i can use? Since it is a tube cd player does that mean it needs special tubes? When I bought it the dealer said you can upgrade the tubes and take it to a whole new level. Right now it has 2 Chinese 12AX7A tubes.

Anybody know how much really good tubes cost and where you could buy them? thx

The jolida jd-100 uses 12ax7 type tubes. The same middle tube that the MG head uses. Any highly regarded 12ax7 tubes or variations of them will work well.

I did some tube rolling with my jolida cdp (jd-601a, a previous version) and found amazing improvements. When I went from the crappy stock tubes to raytheon windmills (5751), the quality of the player was bumped up a notch. When I get my JD-100 I plan on using 2 - sylvania gold pin 5751's (which i already have 4).

Depending on your system, you may want to try a few different types of tubes in an effort find the best combination to best compliment your system as a whole. The transparancy of a lot of the highly regarded 5751 variations may not be desirable for people with brighter systems. All depends on your taste.

I got my Level 1 modified Jolida JD100 second hand with Siemens 5751s in them. The original owner said they were a big improvement over the stock tubes and better than the Svetlanas included in the level 1 mod. I have no idea how much the Siemens cost but he said they were very rare. As for the sound, it sounds very analogue-like. Very warm, sweet, and unfatiging.

I've had good results on my JD100 using RCA 5751 triple mica blackplates:

There are surely better 5751s out there (Sylvania gold pins, Raytheon windmill getter ...), but soo hard to find and / or expensive. It also is all a matter of taste probably, so one should try to compare...

BTW, I could sell my unused Brymar if someone is interested.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm a little concerned about partnering it with my Cayin Spark Audio HA-1A tube amp. Would it make the whole thing too rich/warm sounding.

I're read arnaud & Tuberoller's descriptions but has anyone else used the headphone out directly?

It could very well do that. The jolida jd-100a is known as an analog-sounding, anything but bright cdp. Some might even say it lacks detail.

I personally have ear/jaw problems and bright, over-detailed cdp's will cause physical pain to my ear. I went from listening to a NAD c541i and having a painful ear-ache after 30 min of listening to the jolida jd-601 where i never feel any pain or fatigue..no matter how long i listen. The jd-100a is said to be more detailed and actually have good bass (where the jd-601a does not). So in theory, for me, the jd100a is the perfect match. But for those of you out there wishing to get great detail and be able to really "analyze" the recording, this player is probably not for you... at least unmodded (modding it can/will open up detail). If musicality is what your after ... this player is it.

I switched tubes earlier this week and have been even more pleased with the JD100 since!

I got some RCA 5751 Commands series over at the Gear For Sale section. They replaced my previous RCA 5751 Triple Mica Blackplates.

I have not switched back and forth between the tubes so these impressions might all be placebo. Anyway, the bass feels firmer than before, the midrange even sweeter, the highs definitely more pronounced (but no more extended), the soundstage does not feel very different.

The sound, which was before a little too warm with the AKG 240S, is now more balanced and I quite like that!

Slightly off-topic - but has anyone had the pleasure of directly comparing a stock JD100 to a JD100 sporting the Level 1 mods?
