Just some quick impressions for now since I'm a bit short on time. My meta42 by JMT has finally arrived. I consider it a midlevel meta42, since I didn't ask for better ps caps and buffered outputs, but it's not a 100% barebone stripped down model either. JMT threw in a few goodies for me like current source to bias to class A and an AD8620 op-amp
I'm also using a 2' Homegrown Audio Super Silver Braid interconnect, also built for me by JMT.
The sound from this amp is better than any of the headphone outputs I tried from any of the component cd players, minisystems, and receivers I tested at the Good Guys. The cd I used to test at the Good Guys was "Krupa and Rich." (It was the only cd I had handy at the time, since it was a spur of the moment thing and I forgot to bring a bigger selection of cds with me.) What I listened for was first for how real and authoritative the 2 drummers sounded with the 2 drum sets, and then how the trumpets and saxes sounded. The trumpets and saxes on that recording were recessed in comparison to the drums, so I mostly listened to the drums. I didn't achieve a satisfactory sound until I reached a bunch of $500+ CD/SACD players. It wasn't until then that the drums actually sounded...well, like real drums. Frankly, the meta42 sounds even better, from what I recall from memory. Each hit sounds full bodied and rich, well rounded strike and decay. Cymbals on good recordings are crisp and well defined. The HD580s finally have a warm midrange that was lacking off of my soundcard without an amp.
The new problem that has arisen is that now I can hear all sorts of shiznit goin on coming from my soundcard
