JM Audio Editions XTC Headphones

There is a used pair of Brazilian Blackwood XTC2 open phones with 64 ohm beryllium drivers and defined bass with elevated detail for sale in the Head-Fi classifieds. If this is not the tuning you are looking for you could always send them to John for retuning. Hope this helps.
Thanks a million for the steer... and it looks perfect regarding the tuning and driver type... TBH I have the XTC2 as well and I love the sound, but the price point ATM is just a bit too high for me.

In the end I'm going to buy and OG XTC directly off JM- with the current 10% discount he has at the moment it is manageable- and I can support the man's hard work directly as well, having bought 2 secondhand (and loved them!).. Thanks again and enjoy the music!

And happy belated Thanksgiving to all- may you have much to be thankful for in your lives these days and all the days to come!

Also, just a follow up on the XTC2.5's. I never really believed much in the whole burn in process, which now that I think about it, most of the hi-fi and head-fi gear I have owned over the years, was second hand stuff, which likely had a good amount of hours on them. When I first started listening to the 2.5's, I was a little underwhelmed by the low end. I decided to give them as much burn in time as I could before really deciding on if these were going to fit my liking or not.

I am now sitting on over 50 hours of burn in time, mostly using a playlist I put together that includes classical, jazz, EDM, hardcore electronic, metal, and country. I am now definitely a believer of the burn in process, as these 2.5's have really improved, especially in the low end. I do admit though, I straight away cut the cloth out of the earpads, as the was what sounded best on the Dekoni DT pads I had on my Meze 109 Pro's. John educated me that I need only to cut out a quarter sized hole, to give me a bit clearer highs, yet retain the most amount of low end. He sent me replacement pads, which I did as instructed, and it did improve the sound over the pads with the cloth completely cut out.

I am not starting my burn in journey on the XTC2's and am looking forward to hearing how these really come alive!
For my taste, I found using the leather thick angled pads as the best sounding on the XTC2.5's. I installed the same pads on the XTC2's for now.

Cheers,
Jared

I take all of my dynamic driver headphones and IEMs through the burn in process. Iva heard radical changes. Makes sense thinking about how the dynamic drivers work. I burn them all in and don’t expect to hear the final effect until about 200hours in

That is fantastic to know, as these 2.5's are already sounding phenomenal with just over 50 hours on them. Thanks for the feedback!

People swear by pink noise. There are a billion pink noise videos on YouTube. I found a good headphone burn in one that has pink noise with sweeping tones. No way to know if that or just playing music works best but all will make a different on dynamic driver headphones.

Mind sharing a link to the video you use?

You have a nice collection of headphones without any bias to the blog how would you rank them?
After having these headphones and comparing back and forth for abouth 7 months: XTC2 open, Caldera, XTC Open, XTC Closed, Atrium, verite....XTC 2 open is what I usually grab when new music comes out. The bass is the best I've ever heard. It is a fun headphone with wide sounstage. I'm not sure if it's technically better than the Caldera, but i like it better. Then I use the Caldera to switch it up. The Caldera is really good but not as much bass. I use the Caldera to cleanse my pallet or get another perspective on a song I like. My XTC Open is tuned very similar to my XTC 2, so I haven't been listening to it much. It sounds great, just not as big of soundstage. I love my XTC Closed for acoustic and strings. It's near scalpel tuning which I get a craving for sometimes and it's so addicting. Then the Atrium would follow, which is a pretty good headphone. Then the verite. Verite is nowhere near all the others.

Dms will.twll you you're all wrong as it is 100% brain burn in. I say we all call him out on his video. I have already. His minuscule test proved to him that the 3 drivers he used didn't change. How does he have the right to state categorically that all headphone burn in is fake and drivenby producers who want you to go over the warranty/cooling off period. He is an very intelligent ignorant fool in my humble opinion.

Either way it’s a burn in. Placebo effect is still an effect.

Maybe he can't hear a difference. I found that most equipment appreciates burn-in. The Arctic Grandis for example took ~120 hrs to settle with wild differences in presentation until then.

Stands from John showed up in the mail today. They look fantastic and fit the XTC's very well.
