Is it just me, or is it impossible to keep a jewel case in good condition? I treat all my CDs like gold, and my CD cases almost never move. And yet somehow, I keep getting mysterious scratches on the jewel cases that come out of nowhere, broken teeth from the tray, cracks, and all other kinds of annoying damage. Does anyone else have trouble keeping jewel cases in mint condition, and if they do break, do you leave them like that or replace them with another case?

I hate it when I buy a new disc and when I unwrapped it, the teeth are broken and the disc falls out.

I have spare cases from those that I have archived in cases - I do sometimes replace the ones with broken teeth or loose front lids / covers.

It didn't happen to my cd's yet, mainly because I started to buy CDs a year ago. But my dad's old CD Jewel Cases are in bad condition. But I don't replace them, I like to keep it original

The rare occasions where I actually have physical cds and jewel cases, any broken teeth, cracks, or annoying cases (like the double-disc cases that are a pain in the ass to open) get replaced.

A plastic case is a plastic case. Switch the paper to a new one and there's no difference at all. Just more incentive for me to switch everything to digital copies rather than physical ones.

It depends. I have jewel cases in mint condition that are over 10 years old. I have purchased new ones that are broken. I chose to shrug it off as the price of a replacement is super cheap now-a-days. However, if I buy a super jewel box and that's broken - then I get pissed.

Arrr, yes, those hurt. Luckily, I hardly see any damaged SJs even though those are the ones I actually handle a lot as SACDs are not being ripped here. I usually get broken cases straight from the delivery envelope. I too tend to shrug that off as long as the disc is fine, as in 99% of cases they get ripped and immediately put away anyway. If it is too bad I might replace the case. In the end it's just plastic.

I switched to this a couple of years ago, so I actually don't have jewel cases anymore.

I totally understand what you're talking about. As a CD collector, the early jewel cases can add to the value of an early CD and they are almost impossible to replace. Having them replaced with newer jewel case just won't be the same.

I moved to portable CD cases, about 10 years ago - the jewel cases got thrown out (if broken) or re-used for CDR's / DVDr's, over the years. It was a space / organizer decision, on my part. And, with the move to lossless digital, it makes even more sense for me.

I do miss whole "album" experience, but it was never the same with CD's for me, because of the size. I suppose that we will eventually have digital album art / lyrics / liner notes with digital downloads.

I think NIN's digital releases of Ghosts, and I know the digital release of The Slip, came with assorted digital images (one for each song, plus album art, I think), and I believe The Slip had a lyrics list, too.

It certainly depends! If they are scratch free and not broken when you get them, how you treat them yourself, how they are made (I am sure there are different qualities out there), and more
