Jeez, the SR-80's hurt after extended use.

I think youre wearing them wrong... They should be forward and down a bit, so the bowl pad rim rides along the top/rear edge of your outer ear. the mesh should float above your ear, not rest against it.

they'll still hurt though

, but the image and soundstage should be wider.

Yea, to me grados are GOD AWFUL for comfort. Comfort is so bad.
I always find it funny when people 'put up' with the comfort of them. Self punishment, that's what I call it.

feels better, but I can imagine the pads now squishing my outer ear after another couple hours though

You get used to it. You should adjust them so they feel their best. my first pair of 80's hurt like anything but my 225's and my second pair of 80's are a lot more comfortable. Maybe they are pre-stretching the headbands now. I don't know . Maybe the nerves in my ears are dieing off.LOL.

Yeah, thats when you know you got it right.... when your outer-ears start to feel sore. Eventually the nerves will go numb, and your ear cartilage will soften to a meaty pulp. Takes 2-3 weeks though.

With a properly stretched headband, and broken in bowl pads, I find them quite comfortable, and I can easily wear most Grado phones for 5 to 6 hours before I begin to experience any sort of discomfort. Nothing a 15 to 20 minute break doesn't cure though, and then I'm ready for 5 more hours.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

PS-1s are very heavy, and as such my ears become tender after only a couple of hours, even with the headband properly stretched and bowls broken in.

I can wear the GS-1000s with stock Bagel pads for as long as I am physically able to remain awake (let's say 48 hours or so?). Not that I've tried this, but I have done 9+ hours with them, and nearly forgot I was even wearing them, they were so comfy.

One caveat to being a Grado fan is that you need to understand that (IMO) a HUGE part of that 'Grado magic' lies within the fact that they are of a supra-aural design (only exception being the GS-1000).

Most anything that isn't feathery or pillow soft that rests on your ears will eventually start to cause some level of discomfort. It isn't a matter of if discomfort will set in, it is a matter of when.

Apparently some people are more sensitive to this than other's. I'm glad I don't fall into the camp of being sensitive to the Grado pads...

I guess I'm in the minority that find Grados (with bowls) to be really comfortable- even better than 414 pads! When I wear my MS1 with bowls, I feel no grating against the ears and I can feel the edges of the bowl foam lightly resting along the edges of my ear. If I find these comfortable, I can't even imagine how some beyerdynamic headphones will feel. I'm thinking of getting 990s as my next headphone purchase in the somewhat distant future.

I stick in thin, thin sheets of foam inside the bowls in front of the mesh so it cushions my ears if they rub against them and it also ever so slightly smooths out the sound. Exactly what I like.

wow, i just stretched the band and they are lightly resting on my outer ear and I can barely feel them!

Now that my MS2i with bowls are about a year old and the pads are well settled in(I say settled, cause there is no sign of wear or degradation, just a general comfyness that snuck on in)but I can wear my heavier MS2i with bowls about as long as the CD collection or the clock allows.

Naw; it didn't take a year, but by about hree or four months I noticed virtually no discomfort.

Interestingly; the supreme adjustability of the Grados adds a lot of comfort and less clamp than a lot of the cans that can't be bent without breaking.

Great

. When I stretched the band on my SR225 a little they got a lot more comfortable. I really like the RS1s and GS1000s for comfort in the Grado line.

I bent my MS2's headband to fit my head comfortably. Take a little adjustment but it's much more comfortable, although not that comfortable...but hey, I'm a pampered Sennboy. Also, try getting your hand on the Beyer headbands, they make a big difference. I'm still trying to get mine, but I haven't got the chance as of yet.

P.S.
I blame my MS2i purchase on F107plus5 for always advocating the MS2i when I bought my MS1s ages ago. You want to give me that MS2 for free still right? ^_^
