Looking for sub-$300 cans, one each for the following two categories:

Vocals / Classical / Opera - Highs

Electronica - Lows

I'm thinking for the Highs:

ATH-AD900 or HE-400 or Q701

I'm thinking for the Lows:

M50s

Anyone see anything wrong with the pairing of these devices?

Amp and DAC are the JDS O2+ODAC

Thanks!

i'd strongly consider he-400 or q701's but as I can't get over my q701's it the cheapest of the two and with ur dac/amp combo you'll get to appreciate the can's as much as any other combo that's not absurdly over priced :).  as far as low's I'm in the same dilemma but I'm looking at higher tier cans for my complement, but the m50's are probably the best at there respected price range. I didn't try to persuade you by telling you what you might get from both cans because I feel you might have already done the research on the cans, I hope I helped you on narrowing your decision though Good Luck.

HE-400's bass crushes M50's in every respect (clarity, texture, extension, neutrality, punch)

So if you get the Hifimans, then the M50's become obsolete, and you can save some money.

M50's bass goes very low, I'm not sure about the extension part.

I had the M50's and HE400s together for quite a few months earlier this year, and from what I recall the sinegen tests favored the latter slightly, esp between 25-30 Hz. There was more of a textured subbass growl with HE400s, and more of a low tone-less rumble with the M50s.

He400 don't really produce anything under 30hz.

My older HE400s were perceivably weak under 30Hz, but man this new "rev4" or "rev2.5" actually has nice response from 20-30 Hz. Based on Sinegen I'd say there's only maybe 5 dB rolloff from 30Hz down to 23 Hz, and a steep roll-off past 23.
