Why do headphone companies make cables different lengths going to the earpiece. Am I missing something? It seems like the general consensus is that these are pain. And it is good companies that do it- Senn to name one. Can someone fill me in on the advantage?

It is not a general consensus that J-chords are bad. A lot of people actually would rather have the J-chord than the Y-chord. Personally I like the Y-chord because i hate how the J-chord tugs on 1 ear and makes it seem unbalances and throws off my zen :P.

It also prevent earphones from falling out when something pulls the cable . OK, 1 earphone may fall out but the other one (that which have longer cord) will stay in its place.
What is more, J cord is more comfy for me.

so you can laugh at the people who don't wear em behind their neck
and look ridiculous when they have the long side under their chin

single side entry. the cord goes right down the left side of your body into your left pocket, where your DAP and maybe amp are located

My pk2 has the j-cord and I like it over the Y for the most part but it sucks in the heat when your neck gets sweaty and the cord sticks to your neck and you turn your neck and one of the buds fall out

Well spoken.

Change the user, not the equipment.

Also, in Japan, wired remote controller units on portable music players (such as the ones bundled in with the iPod or the current radio remote) are nearly universal. A short plugged "J" cord allows the cord to connect on your left side, where the remote is usually clipped into your shirt pocket or on your handbag strap.

It's very common here, and I prefer it. Largely because it keeps the cord out of the way, also I like not having to look to know which bud is "left" or "right".

Best regards,

-Jason
