I've tried the d-JAYS with Triflanges

I've put the Etymotic triflanges onto the d-JAYS. I feel comfortable with triflanges, I can get the seal and they don't hurt me. However, the sound is a bit muddy, compared to the foam tips (ety black foam tips). I was hoping to have found the perfect tips for the d-JAYS, to tame a bit their mids and bring out the highs, but they sound muddier than with the foam on. Until now the foam tips seem to be the best.
Could it be because of the narrow triflange canal?

My thoughts...

Yeah the D-jays have some forward mids and gently rolled off highs... thats kind of hit or miss with most folks. I for one tend to enjoy that kind of sound. So long as the highs are not severely rolled off like the e2c or FX33 (for example).

Good luck rolling different tips... I have never tried them with anything other than the OEM tips.

Have you considered adding an amp? A simple 9V cmoy can color the sound to your liking. I use an OPA2227 in my cmoy and I find it brightens the treble on the d-jays.

When I was experimenting with the e2c-mods... I found that the farther I inserted the tube into my ear, the more it increased the highs. Maybe you could look into modding the ety-tip to seat them farther in?

So, according to you I could cut the base of the triflanges and try them that way. Or otherwise I could go with BI-flanges.
What I really would like to do is make them a little flatter, 'cuz this way some vocals (and electric guitars) are too fatiguing.

Why don't you hook the P to S cable to them. It should balance the sound out as much as any tip change. It should tighten up some of the guitar and treble harshness and add some bass smoothing them out a bit. I don't have the d-JAYS but I have had the Super.fi 3's twice now and they have a similar mid-forward presentation. It is worth a try if you haven't already.

They still might need some EQ which should be fine with the players you have.

I've used my d-JAYS extensively with bi-flanges, and I've decided to move back to the stock tips. The main problem here is that the stalk on the d-JAYS are wider/bigger than what's standard in the industry, so if you put on shure triflanges that are made for a thinner stalk, they're going to fold over the end. This could potentially be what's causing the sound degredation. Solution? Cut off as much of the stalk as possible so that it is right at the end of the smallest flange.

But then there would be no point in using triflanges instead of the stock tips (apart from isolation).
