I have some praise and some complaints.

SR60 have great energy but not enough bass.
ES7 sound good but comfort is a problem.
HD485 are comfy with big bass but it swallows the treble.
PortaPro (probably my favorite flavor) need precision. All of 'em do, really.

I have a couple cans in mind but I'm just gonna leave this completely open to suggestion first. I'd like to keep it under $300 but if the solution is really perfect I'll go to $500. No IEM's. These will be heard out of a CD player line out (Panasonic, Aiwa, or iRiver) to a Penguin Royal. My favorite albums are Crystal Planet, And Justice For All, Use Your Illusion 1&2, and Youthanasia.

Thoughts on a speedy, precise headphone with big, crisp, thumpy bass and full mids and treble?

have you modded your PortaPros at all?

try an amped SR-225!

i have done the quarter mod but i'm back to regular foams.

the 225 is on my short list. so is rs2. i have the reverse 414 pads on my sr60. i was worried better grados wouldn't be enough of a change or have the extra bass i want, but the penguin has a bass boost which may compensate/synergize nicely.

How about AD900 or AD2000. AD900 might have not enough bass but AD2000 has enough bass impact for your favorite music genres I believe. They scale up very well with good amps but they still sound nice out of portable amps.

Also, if you really enjoyed grado sound, you might want to look into used RS1. They have enough bass (at least they were enough for me).

$800 is too much for me to swing.

i have done minimal reading on those. i basically know they exist but was under the impression the cups were the same size as my es7, which wouldn't solve my comfort issue. am i mistaken?

Which one is $800?!!?!
I don't think any of these mentioned phones are $800 even at new.

If you don't mind getting used, AD900 is around $200 and AD2000 is $450, which I am selling

and RS1 is in similar range these days ($450-500).

Well, if you don't like used, AD2000 and RS1 will be out of your budget but certainly not $800.

Some of the vendors have that price but more popular sites like audiocubes has them at $699, ebay around $600 and pricejapan has them at $580. Anyway, I am not trying to argue or say that you should get them. But I think AD2000 and RS1 is really good headphones for your needs and in fact are in your price range (if bought used of course).

The SR225s bass is much better than the SR60...If you want more you could try the SR325i. Get a decent tube amp - little dot MK 3 or thereabouts.

That depends on people. I would definitely spend some money towards DAC but I prefer headphones like AD2000/AD900 without expensive amp to the less expensive headphones + amp. For example, D2000 (stock) + Cantate.2 didn't blow away AD2000 or W5000 without proper amplification. But of course, AD2000 and W5000 sounds much much better with desk amp.
