I agree with your viewpoint that the DT770's are great for what they do. The same way I consider my W10VTG to be at the top of mid-fi as well. I've never let their "mid-fi" status keep me from enjoying the music with them.

Hehehe, do I have to consider the Qualia 010 Hi-Fi or not? I think you know what I consider it...

Poo-Fi.

I can understand not liking Krell, but it comes back to my main point that hi-fi is in the ear of the beholder.

Which brings me back around to the DT770 -- it's as hi-fi as any non-wood Grado.

I totally agree with you on this. Not liking B&Ws, Krell or name your brand is understandable but to call the N800 mid-fi would take an extreme snob imo.

To the original question about upgrading from the DT-770, I liked the A900ltd for a slightly different sound if you can still find it.

Rather a sidestep than an upgrade for tranceheads. I had the opportunity to do a longer A/B comparison between my DT770 and the A900. While the A900 sounded better with most music styles, it was a dead race when it came to electronica. They sounded surprisingly identical with this genre.

Overall, I like the A900 better, though. But only slightly. The DT770 is still my favourity can as I'm a downbeathead.

Hmm. Yeah, my statement on the B&W was pretty unfair. Lol, probably more of a expression of my frustration at not being able to find the right speakers for me. They are very good and deserve their place at the top.

Well, I think most Qualia 010 owners have given up long ago trying to convince other people why they're good. It's kind of a hopeless cause, and honestly, it's not really our loss.

I guess I'll say it again tho, until I get my HE90 back, the 010 really is the best headphone I have had in my apt.

Best,

I'm really sorry you couldn't bring yourself to quote me when I said Poo-Fi.

Isn't the DT990 basically on open DT770? I haven't heared the DT990, but it seems to have the same tone and signature than the DT770. Moreover, the DT770 might be the (slightly) more coherent sounding can of both.

"The same like DT770, but better" isn't available on the market IMO. I think astranovus should try a sidestep with something completely different, maybe a Grado or a Alessandro, in order the achieve a higher PRAT than the slowish and cosy Beyer.

i'm still in the burn in phase of my dt770 , currently about 20hrs

the soundstage is changing slightly, the bass isn't muddy anymore.

i think i've found a set of cans i shall be listening to for a while, shame i only got to know about the customisation option after i had purchased.

this is to everyone, i seem to have an old version of the dt770-80, is this one better than the new edition,

I don't think the 990 has the same sound signature as the 770. It sounded much brighter when I A/B'ed the two in a store. Good, though - but it might take a while for your ears to adjust!

There is no 'new' 770/80 AFAIK, the new versions come in 32, 250 and, I think, 600 ohm flavours. They look different, too. One member here who knows a thing or two about 770s has said the 770/80 is still the best, but too few people here have directly compared them yet for there to be a general consensus about it.

What?! You've got a brand new can and have already asked for a possible upgrade?

Is this true? i always read the DT990 had a better soundstage and more coherency? Would be a bummer as i am holding off on a DT770-32 in favor of a DT990 i bought off of Arielext from these forums only (i can't try the DT990's yet as they are in the Netherlands, and i am currently in India)

And two headphones is a bit too much for me and my wallet atm (especially as those dt770's would set me back yet another 264 bucks)

The "old" DT990 had basically the same sonic signature as the DT770, but with a bit more of the "open can" soundstage. I actually prefer the DT770/80 to the DT990/250, though -- the DT770/80 has a less recessed midrange than the DT990/250 (and the DT770/250).

I have not heard the 2005/6 DT990, however.
