In your eq, slide all your EQ levels to max. Then turn the pre amp (left most slider) all the way down. Put your amp to 12. Then use your volume on tunes to taste. Does it sound any different? Use the on/off in the EQ to a/b. Close your eyes and give approx. 1 sec. after clicking to let the change take place.

tbritton pointed out dropping the pre out to remove compression on data.

I hear a more clear and dynamic sound. It is more noticable on older recordings and quieter music than power music.
