We got a new puppy. This has fulfilled a lifelong dream for both my wife and I. Her name is Zoe and we think she's a little shepard, but we're not sure what else. Those people coming to the next MD/VA/DC meet will get to meet her.

Yeah she just got spayed yesterday. Got her from the local SPCA shelter at an adoption fair.

Oh yeah, we always said that we would get a shelter pup. She came from a foster program and the foster parents were very helpful and enthusiatic.

If there had been any rescue shelters with dogs that needed re-homing, we would have gone that route, but as there's no dog overpopulations here thanks to careful breeding, we had to go the breeder route, but she's been a really great help and has become a friend, so it was a good thing. They do have rescue trips organizised to Estonia, but the information was all a bit confusing, so we chickened out.

How old is she do you think? This meet will be good for her, it's good to get out and meet lots of different people that are friendly to her.

Congratulations! My husband and I know how you feel, because it was a dream to get a dog even before we moved in together, but we never could because we only had a one-room flat. When we got this place, we weren't even moved-in yet before I was hunting for the perfect puppy. I found her, and my husband said we shouldn't because we'd be busy packing and moving and remodeling and all that. My reply was that moving only took a few days really, and there wasn't much remodeling to do, and she would be 9 weeks old after we moved, and he had that whole entire month off, and I had the summer. That's the entire summer with the puppy before going off to work. And the better breeders don't breed often. And it really was our dream.

But you know what he tells Pixie now? He tells her that I didn't want her, but that he wanted her and that he tried and tried to convince me. He's trying to bias her against me by re-writing history!

But Pixel isn't above taking bribes in the form of bones, toys, and treats, so it's ok.

Have you started calling each other mommy and daddy yet?

nice, I love dogs!

Shelters are the best, most noble and cheapest way to get a dog. You can get many pure breeds there for a mere fraction of a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere. Mutts are cool too of course plus they tend to have less health problems. Best of all all dogs in shelters are killed if no one adopts them

so by getting a dog or cat there, you are saving their lives.

Not all shelters kill animals. There is at least one no-kill shelter I know of in my area.

We know she's about 12 weeks old. She's already doing really well with housebreaking and she's got a great Vet demeanor. Overall, she's a sweetie. Fortunately we have a few friends with dogs, so there will be play-dates soon. Plus the foster parents have offered to watch her when needed and will call us whenever they have a BBQ. It's a nice little community they set up with their program.

We have two cats too, so we've been calling each other that for awhile

Frankly, she's cuter than I am so that's good.

I'm not sure if this group has a no-kill policy or not. We have mixed feelings about the no-kill policy. On the one had it would be nice to support a group that does not euthanize the animals after a period of time. However, you're not doing anything to help the animals who are going to be put to sleep. It's a bit of a Catch 22.
