I bought these MDR-V6s ~5-6 years ago. They have been great headphones, but the cord has deteriorated away. I've wrapped it in paper and then electrical tape, but I am hoping there may be a more permanent solution or easy way to replace the cable.

Any suggestions?

Is it just the cable that's bad? You could have the cable replaced. I'm not too familiar with that model, in regards to replacing the cable, but I'm sure it's possible. You could do it yourself, or send them out somewhere. Not sure where you are, but Jay's repair in NYC is an option as well.

I would get it re cabled with a higher quality cable, and you might get some better sound quality out of it. If you can get a cable with the fabric kind of heat shrink that would probably help you in the durability department. (and I would also get some new ear pads, they are looking crusty)
