Yep, even my girlfriend's first reaction upon seeing the video was, "Are those Sennheisers?"
The song has so many hits because it has that uniquely creepy atmosphere that makes a good internet meme video. It straddles a line; it's difficult to tell whether the guy is serious about the song or just making something bizarre for its own sake. I think he's in on the joke by now, but when he first posted the video, I think he posted it as a serious song.
He's never had singing or piano lessons (go figure), but he's interested in the techniques used for those things. The problem is that his ideas about what makes music good or interesting are only half-formed. Just IMO. After all, I thought the piano line was just near-random notes entered into a sequencer until I saw the part of the video where he's actually playing the piano. It sounds like he got his technical instruction from listening to some general MIDI files.
In any case, the lyrics are hilariously cryptic. I think I know what he's getting at...
Chocolate rain:
-raised your neighborhood's insurance rates
-made you turn your head the other way
-history quickly crashing through your veins
-some stay dry and others feel the pain
