Is this a proper setup technical-wise?

Connecting a Sony ZX300 Dap to modi with a rca to 3.5mm cable, then connect the modi to magni. And plug the sennheiser HD600 into the magni. Correct me if this setup cannot properly connect. I want to avoid double amping as well. Thank you in advanced.

Does that DAP even have coaxial digital output?

Also do you know whether or not I am double amping? The internal amp on the zx300 and the magni. Thanks

If it has coaxial digital output then it can't be double amping since you send a digital signal from the ZX300 to the Modi with Converts the Digital signal into Analogue, which then gets passed to the amplifier to get amplified.

correct. make sure you're using a digital 75 ohm coax cable (3.5mm from the DAP > RCA on the modi).
Can someone link me a "digital 75 ohm coax cable with 3.5mm" @buonassi was suggesting? I can't find one anywhere.

I am not receiving sound and I'm not sure why. I'm using these cables to connect magni to modi: https://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-Audio...mposite+cable&qid=1563795827&s=gateway&sr=8-3

And this to connect my zx300 DAP to my modi: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01D5H8KO2?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image

This doesn't work with my Fiio M9 DAP either.
Help please!!

1. Because the ZX300 spec sheet doesn't even list 75ohm coaxial digital output. That's why I was asking if you're sure that it even has that feature.

2. M9 lists it but you're using that cable with a splitter which is probably why it doesn't work. Try this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Micca-Premiu...ax+75+ohm&qid=1563803665&s=electronics&sr=1-2

Okay, I will try that Micca cable for the M9.

Do you know which cable I need for the ZX300? I read the spec sheet but still am having trouble understanding which cable is needed.

My point was it might not even be the cable because it's very likely it doesn't even have that feature. It doesn't list "digital coaxial output" or anything like that anywhere, only balanced and single ended headphone output.

Also Sony devices apart from TV antennae inputs when CRTs were still a thing barely even used coax. Buy a Sony CDP or DVD-P (anything pre-BluRay and HDMI) and they only had optical. My SACDs and CDPs, including all my Discmans and MD Walkmans, if they had digital output it was always optical output.

@Raven777777 you can't send your player's sound to an external DAC (modi) unless you have a 'digital' output on your DAP. it can be confusing because many digital outs (coax/spdif) on DAPs are 3.5mm jacks and look like headphone or lineout jacks.

What exactly are you trying to do? You seem to want to play files located on your player on a desktop rig. There are several ways to achieve that:

1. Digital Output from your player > digital cable > modi > analog RCA interconnects > Magni
2. Line output from your player > analog stereo 3.5 to dual RCA cable > Magni
3. Headphone output from your player > analog stereo 3.5 to dual RCA cable > Magni***

***not ideal because the output impedance of your headphone output on your player is not matched for 'analog input' of a desktop amp. This is one concern with 'bi-amping'. The other is that you can't reference 1.5-2 volts 'line level' and risk clipping the amp if your player's headphone output is set too high.

I tried the Micca cable with my M9 but since there is only one end of it, sound is only coming from the right of the headphone. And that is only if I take the modi out of the equation. :frowning2: I can't find any cables with two ends

I've tried 1 & 2 with the Micca cable on my fiio M9 and set it to Line out and tried SPDIF out but still no sound.

That's because one RCA plug only carries one + and one -.

A TRS plug can have one + or two +.

In the case of that cable where it has only one RCA on one end then inevitably it will have the kind of TRS that only has one + on it.

That isnt meant to carry an analogue stereo (ie two channel) signal. It's meant to be used as a coaxial digital cable. You can't skip the Modi for that - it can carry a two channel digital signal to the Modi but it will only make contact with one + pin inside the socket on the M9 (not to mention there's only one RCA plug at the other end), so if it's on analogue mode, it will only carry one analogue channel signal.

At teh very least that eliminates the possibility of the cable being broken so the problem is at the other end.

Did you switch this in the menu when you hook it up to the Modi? It needs to be on "SPDIF." And LO is Line Out ie if you're hooking it up to an amplifier it skips the driver op-amps.

I don't understand...didn't you have one?

They're all over Amazon.

Just to cover all bases...was it set to SPDIF on #1 hooked up to the Modi? LO is if you're hooking it up direct to the Magni.

Also...if what you have is the Modi3...did you connect a USB charger to the other port on the Modi? One is for digital input with the USB logo over it, the other is for USB power with a wall plug icon over it. And then flip the front switch to the bottom to select coax SPDIF since the top is a USB icon (the aforementioned USB digital input) and the square-ish icon is for SPDIF optical.

And double check on the Modi's manual what kind of charger because it might require more than 250mA or 500mA.

LO with the magni only - this is the only method that works

Modi 3, yes. I plugged the USB to the port that charges it. the light is turned on and I flipped the switches back and forth. neither switch works with the Modi

Im using the Modi's manual that came in the box. and charging block came in the box aswell
