Okay, I've decided that I need just one more can to complete my basic headphone collection (yeah, right!
). Then I can just sit back, enjoy the music and let the cash save up up until something special comes along (HP1000, L3000, K1000 etc).
My gear at the moment:Arcam CD72, Trichord Pulsar Series One DAC, Mapletree Ear+, ipod, little Dot Micro +, Project Debut II, Project phonobox, RS1, MDR-F1, KSC75 (in Porta Pro headband, reversed 414s, starquad cable).
I use the RS1s as my main cans and I adore them. They're pretty much the only cans I use for proper listening when I'm focused only on music and not doing something else at the same time. They're great for the majority of my music which is mostly rock, classic rock, older pop and accoustic stuff.
I have the KSC75s and the Little Dot for the portable rig and I'm happy enough with that.
The MDR-F1s are generally only used plugged straight into my soundcard for background music when on the computer (PC is never used as a source for 'proper' listening).
This week though I've had someone move in to live with me and it means at night when she's in bed I'm watching movies with headphones rather than 5.1 speakers. I've been using the RS1s for this, but I find them very bright and pretty fatiguing , which I found odd since to me they're fine when listening to music for extended periods (though I am running them from a HT receiver when watching movies). Same goes for comfort. I can sit and listen to music for hours in comfort, but watching a film I find that by the end I'm noticing that my ears are hurting a little.
I also feel I'm missing out on a can that's more suited to classical music and anything else that requires soundstage.
Finally, although I like the KSC75s for general portable use, I find they're not isolating enough for use on a train or plane and I'm concious of how much sound they leak too.
So I was thinking of a can to account for these shortcomings in my gear. Something that would be good for movies, good for music that doesn't suit the RS1 and provide a nice contrast from what I have already, very comfortable, non-fatiguing and would serve well as a decent isolating/non-leaking semi-portable can. One that would also suit the MAD Ear+ and the LDM+. I'm not interested in IEMs either.
So I figure closed, circumaural cans are the way to go. I don't really want to spend any more than £250 and don't fancy having to get extra amps etc to match the new cans either. I know the W1000s seem to get a pretty harsh time here, but they seem, on the surface at least, to fit the bill. And they're so, so pretty
I'm not a basshead, but I'm a little put off by the reports that it's bass lean. Also I'm concerned the sound may be a little too close to the Grado sound to make it worthwhile.
There are no places around here that stock them and I don't know of anywhere that sells them with a decent returns policy so I'm buying blind here...I'm putting my faith in Head-fi.
