Is the HK FL8300 5 disc cd changer a good cd player? I was offered to buy one used but not sure how good it is compare to the newer players of today.
It has optical and coaxial out i believe. Anyone have any experience with this cd player and it's sound quality?

Thanks

I got a chance to pick up this CD player cheap (~ $20). I have to say - I'm not the least bit disappointed at this price point.

First off, this player has analog out and digital coax out - there is no optical, unfortunately. Least not on mine.

Now I'm no expert on DACs, but I can say that the analog out on this sounds leaps and bounds better than the output from my Sherwood RD7106 receiver (~$400 retail 5 years ago) (from a digital CD run to it). To quantify this, I want to say the sound is less veiled, with much better separation of instruments and such. Just so I'm clear - this difference was instantly obvious to me. To further put this into perspective though, my Denon AVR1905 receiver (~$500 retail 2 years ago) sounds as good / arguably better via the digital coax run.

I don't have a reference point to modern CD players, unfortunately. I imagine players approaching $1000 will be noticeably better, but I doubt that any random player for a few hundred bucks will be obviously superior.

There is one huge downfall, in my opinion. When you open the big 5-CD tray in this player, you may want to have it rotate the tray around, so you can swap all of the discs. Problem is, ALL of the control buttons are UNDER the tray. This is insanely annoying..

In short, if you can deal with the button placement and you are offered a reasonable price - this player is a great candidate.
