it is hard to judge 'what is best' as everyone have differing opinions on what good sound is. for instance, there is a large population now that loves either the cowon d2 or the sony a600 and a800 series. creative is also known around headfi as being a decent and good sounding option.

however, if you have money to bleed headfi loves the kenwood mediakeg players and of course the ubiquitous imod of the 4g and 5g ipods.

personally, i am very happy with my ipod touch as it has very decent performance as well as gapless playback which for trance is absolutely important.

you need to listen to a few and see if you like them. ultimately, it has little to do with hardware and more to do with your personal taste and preferences.

nomad jukebox 3?

i have one...actually it's an excellent choice for location recording...but as a player: it's heavy, slow, scroll wheel sucks, battery life sucks, software is a nightmare to use/organize, and it would smash into a thousand pieces if dropped.

of the recent DAP the best for SQ seem to be:

- Sony S610 series unanimously
- Cowon IAudio 7

while these players have been recently popping up on this forum, that hardly means they're considered the best. but yes, they are both very good from headphone-out.

generally, the iMod, paired with a good amp, seems to be the ultimate sound for portable players.

yea, but the imod is a portable rig, not a stand alone dap,

and the imod died with the 5th gen ipod, the classic just isnt worth the effort from what im hearing,

I'm still using the JB3 and loving it. A while back I added a 60GB hard drive, and you can now get new batteries from 3rd parties for $30, shipping included. I was tempted to abandon it when the Ipod Classic came out, but I just can't learn to love the sound from the Apple products I've listened to carefully (to my ears, poor sound stage and very fatiguing). I need a minimum of 60 GB capacity and so the Kenwood is tempting, but the price is well out of my range (and there are reports of hiss). The same goes for the Imod (save for the hiss). This said, the JB3 isn't for everyone, as it's big, heavy and ugly. But the SQ keeps me and my (I believe) very well trained ears very happy. My plan is to hold onto it for another two years and see what's available at a reasonable cost then.

why is it always from what people are hearing on the forums. half or more of the people giving away good or bad opinions on hardware have not even heard the sources/headphones etc. the ipod 6g has some firmware issues perhaps, but hardware-wise it is one of the best ipods to be released and that puts it quite far up in the overall scale. when the firmware gets fixed up and it is not dropping voltage anymore, it will be again on the top.

lod with it is great, and even from the headphone is wonderful. i have the meizu, d2 and sony as well as ipod nano. the sony have the best bass from low-imp phones, but that is where it ends. it cannot give the same soundstage or thick sound as even the ipod nano when it comes to larger more usual phones. i love it but... every portable has problems and will not be perfect in all situations... d2 - cannot drive low imp phones: like every other player on the market.

EDIT: i cannot comment on the creative... i was reacting to a reaction!

I though kenwood is the best sounding DAP.

at headfi, we have what is called fotm: fad of the moment. the kenwood is a decent player but not technically superior to anything else i have heard. it has some nice warm distortion that gives it the laid back soothing sound.

headfi is not a sight about technical sound quality - at least for portables. it seems to be a site that is about bashing certain players and headphones and people that use them and then moving onto a different brand. cheers

Was I the only one who thought FOTM stood for Flavor of the Month?
