I just got my Alessandro MS2s and plan to sell off my old Grado SR80s. But since the MS2s are barely portable, I want to get a seperate set of headphones strictly for portable use. Then I got interested in earphones to replace my Sony ex71sls while I am at it. So I was wondering if the A8s are good enough around $120 to replace both my SR80s and ex71sls.

Any ideas?

I've never heard your sonys before, but I don't think the A8 is worth its price. It's definitely not an upgrade to the SR80. For the price I would rather get canalphones.

Well to replace SR80 in my opinion, you need something like Westone UM2 or Shure e5c, and both are around $300. You definitely sounds a basshead to me, and I would recommand you go for shure e2c if you are looking for something bassy and keeping the price below $120.

Those E2cs sounds very appealing. Especially when they cost as low as $70 + shipping. When on the move, I am not very sensitive to the intricacies of the music I listen to, so I dont think a high end IEM will be necessary. That was the reasoning behind the A8. Plus, I didnt know the E2cs are so cheap!

the e2c is a nice canalphone, the caveat being that its sound is largely dependent on the source driving it. specifically, the bass from the e2c is very dependent on source. from my old school pcdp the e2c sounds very nice with rich bass; with a new school mp3 cd player, the SQ is considerably worse. from my nomad zen and ipod mini, the SQ is nice but the bass is nonexistant. hmm..

frequency response isnt everything..

but what do you think you will get from a earphone that has a freq range of 50hz to 20khz?

50hz!!!...

probably this earphone is more adjusted to the mids/highs of jazzy sounds..

not really for the bass lovers.

i tested a set a while back.. it looks "cool" but.. i didnt like the lack of.. bass depth

Haven't heard the ex71's, but i own the a8 and the e2c, both of which i use on the move. The a8 is rather expensive, but very very very cool, and the sound quality is rather nice, however it does tend to be better at low volumes in the quiet, not really what you're after, whereas the e2c is what i use for my commute, as the isolation is just lovely, i can ignore all of the unwashed plebs on my train and get jiggy with miles davis, ray charles, or whoever is this morning's choice...

or words to that effect... it's a long commute...
