Are you using the Stock cable with the 109 Pro?

Sabre dac chips might not be the best source for the 109. They tend to be on the bright side and can slightly border on harsh. Depending on the devices tuning, it can be a bit analytical. The 109 is potentially a better match with a warmer, smoother, more colored and musical device. Shanling AKM devices sound like velvet. I read about somebody in the 109 thread having this same issue. He switched to a Fiio AKM device and loves it now.

Nothing wrong. I would keep S2 and return 109. Take all reviews with a grain of salt as you can only trust yourself in this hobby.somehow i really have big issues with my mezes. i can't just get the reviews etc. for me they are to distorded, harsh and not as controlled like the s2 are. am i just stupid to use them? also vocals is still where the s2 are miles ahead. what am i doing wrong? my Source is an K5 pro ess

Well, HD660S2 and Meze 109 Pro would need different kind of set up to synergise well. Glad you found the correct pairing in the end.
Based on character, 109 is at brighter side with sweeter tone and more spacious soundstage, compared to fuller, warmer and narrower sounding of HD660S2.

I have the 660s2 but not the 109 pro. IMO the 660s2 is good but not great. Amazon sale makes them better from a value perspective. But as an afterthought, I do not think the s2 are worth full price. Meze usually puts out some good stuff. Have you watched or read any reviews?

My Lotoo Paw Gold Touch makes the 109 Pro sound much better than my other sources. Sometimes, source is all the difference.well the issue seems to be magical fixed after i got my fiio k7. now they sound how i expected them to sound

My Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones and my Meze 109 Pro headphones are best from my Lotoo Paw Gold Touch. My Shure SRH1540 headphones are best from my Sony NW-WM1Z. All use is balanced. I really love all my audio equipment. I often wonder how the Sennheiser HD660S2 headphones would do.Lotoo actually knows how to tune a device.
