Sorry for the newbie qustion. I was wondering if you can use an X3 with a portable speaker, to play music in the garden through it  etc,

I don't see anything that would prevent you from doing so. The only restriction is you would have to use a cable, there's no bluetooth or even wifi integrated in the X3.
 
Indeed I think the X3 would be especially suitable for this because of it's high output power – which means you could crank up even small-bore speakers to a decent volume... another question is how such speakers would sound then...
