Head-Fier
sorry for the ultima--obviously meant utopia I can't seem to correct it in the editor
when I try using balanced headphone cables (moon audio silver ) from my dac (Ayre codex) to my utopias I notice an increase in dynamic range of approximately 100% (which is what we would expect). The problem is that this sounds great on hd800's (maybe because they aren't dynamic enough to start out with) but on the focal utopias it sounds bad (maybe because they are manufactured to a correct dynamic response to start out with?)
anyway, I find that I can hear both the loudest crescendos and softest low level sound through the stock single ended cable.
through balanced cables I have to lower the volume to accommodate the loudest portions (and therefore lose the lowest level information) or endure unnaturally loud passages that ruiin the music for me
BUT: I am 75 years old and I may be simply showing a lack of tolerance for very loud noises common to my age group
let me know
