  Yeah it helps with both comfort and tightning up the bass as well. Reason its popular is because its pretty dang cheap to do. Most people have some laying around.

I wish that I gave it a try when I did own them, maybe it would've helped. Nonetheless the m50x's just weren't for me

I always see the DT990 Pro 250ohm go up against the m50x. Between those two I would pick the 990 after using both.

No way are the m50x the best. There is no "best" headphone. But if you want a really good headphone the m40x with zmt cowhide earpads is a jewel of a headphone. Sound and comfort is outstanding.

first of all, the 990 originally cost a hell of a lot more than the m50x
second of all they are open headphones
 
so a better comparison are the DT770
and then, the performacne and the price are much more similar

I found the soundmagic hp150 to be a way better can than the m50x. It has a nice soundstage and instrument positioning that the m50x lacks.
