Is ATH M50x the best headphone under $150?

No way are the m50x the best. There is no "best" headphone. But if you want a really good headphone the m40x with zmt cowhide earpads is a jewel of a headphone. Sound and comfort is outstanding.

I always see the DT990 Pro 250ohm go up against the m50x. Between those two I would pick the 990 after using both.

first of all, the 990 originally cost a hell of a lot more than the m50x
second of all they are open headphones

so a better comparison are the DT770
and then, the performacne and the price are much more similar

EDIT forgot to mention the DT990 and 880 are on sale right now

but its the low impedence version for 880, not worth it

keep in mind, these are open headphones so everyone can hear what you are listening to

Here are some headphones I got for $150 or less that sounded better to me than the M50x:

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700
Audio-Technica ATH-M30x
Audio-Technica ATH-M40x
Koss KSC75
Koss KTXPRO1
Koss UR40
MartinLogan Mikros 90
Philips SHP9500
Pioneer SE-300
Sennheiser HD 590 Prestige
STAX SR-30
Yamaha HPH-MT220

The Sony MDR-7506 & MDR-V6 also sometimes sounded better.
