A K240-S, certainly not.

A K240-M or DF or Sextett, it's a matter of taste (and amplification).

If you don't have an amp, I don't think any K240 is a likely good solution for you. The new K240s seems to be, by widespread agreement, not very good. The old k240 series are reputed to sound much better, but are all very high impedance, meaning that you'll get very little volume out of them without an amp.

As for whether they're an improvement in sound quality over an SR80, I should be able to tell you in about a week. I have a set of K240 sextets on the way. I have SR80s here, and I like their liveliness, but not their harsh high end and relative lack of bass.

An old pair of K141s got me going down the AKG path. The K240 sextet was recommended to me and with a tip from a fellow forumite, I now have a pair on the way. Hopefully this is the middle ground I've been looking for. I'll post my impressions when they arrive.

If you want to try higher impedance headphones, you could pick up a small amp, like a CMOY or a PA2V2. Both are fairly inexpensive and easily found on eBay.

I think the SR80 sound better than the K240s, except that the K240s has a lot bigger soundstage.

However, the K240S is a great-sounding headphone for the price if you can get it for the ongoing used price (~$60). I haven't had the chance to hear other versions of the K240, but with proper amplification, it is a decent choice. The bass is a little boomy, highs a bit laid back, but overall quite good compared to other cans in that price range.

They're okay but considering at $60 you can get the eH350, SR60, DT231, K81DJ, and a few others, nahhhhhh I can do better.

I just went from the SR80 to the K240S not too long ago, and it's really a sidestep. You lose some of the sparkling highs and aggressiveness, but the K240s still has a fun sound and the soundstage is better too. I usually run my k240s through a small amp, but I actually think the k240s sounds pretty good unamped. I'd take the k240s over any of the headphones that qazwsx has mentioned (I've owned them all).

Man, I recorded with a pair of K240s yesterday and absolutely loved them. Very, very accurate for recording. However, they seem not to be preferable for other purposes. Well oh well, I loved 'em.
