My EX-71SL are hissing when connected to the iRiver H340. It's only noticeable in quiet environment (like at home), but it's still quite bothersome.
When plugged in to a different player there is no hiss.

Is this a known problem?
I'm using 1.29 J Firmware. Maybe it has something to do with it?

Yes, it's a known issue. It has nothing to do with your firmware version. The irivers have a noticeable hiss with low impedance headphones.

All low impedance headphones?
Good thing I didn't get the Shure E2c...

By the way, when I plug the earphones to the Line Out they hiss much less... but it sounds different.

This is because the line-out jack bypasses the internal headphone amp, and is made to be used with an external amp.
