does that mean i couldn't use it with an external amp, without an external dac as well?

Line Out (and Line In) is a 3.5mm jack with both analog and digital capabilities. Pretty cool how iRiver bundles the optic into the Line Out jack. Though dust gathering can be a possibility if the player is without a case.

BTW, it would appear that optic is a true Line Out as it is not affected by volume control like analog. Though both analog and digital are affected by th equaliser.
