my new h140 is freezing up on me! sometimes the "hd busy" light will come on and the music will stop for a few seconds, other times the music doesn't come back on at all. the display indicates the dap is still "playing". it has been rockboxed. any ideas what the problem might be?

The version of rockbox you are using isn't playing nice with your iriver. Try using the iriver firmware. I highly recommend trying an older version of rockbox, the last version I installed is from early April, iirc.

By the way, is it a used H140? If so, re-format it and start fresh, their may be some fragmentation of files on the HDD from previous owner(s) if its used.

Well, that sucks.

Did you have the problem before installing RockBox?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to just reformat the thing. A minor pain, but it would tell you whether it is firmware or hardware related. If it is a recent e-bay purchase (like mine), it is probably still under warranty.

I plan to Rockbox mine so I can get Flac support, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Frankly, I have been amazed by the sound quality of the H140 w/ latest Iriver firmware (v. 1.65) straight out of the headphone jack into Shure E4c's. Right now, I just have a few wav files on it for test purposes, but it sounds quite good. When using the optical out into the MicroStack, the sound is pristine. I have heard no hum, hiss, clicks, or any other annoyances whatsoever. If Iriver supported Flac, I wouldn't even bother with Rockbox, but there you go.

sadly the iriver firmware isn't an option. i'm going 100% flac, so rockbox.

the player is brand new. can you tell me a rockbox build that works with the h140d? this is what is on the box: h140d. if you do know the right rockbox to get, can you provide a direct link? the rockbox page just confused me.

I *think* the IRiver H140D was designated for sale in Europe; they are the units all over E-bay right now. I don't know which version of RockBox would be best, but I don't think it "should" matter (as between versions compatible with the H100 series). If you find an answer to this, I'd appreciate it if you would post it or pm me, since I have the same unit and the same intentions (i.e., load it with FLAC). Here's the download page, which you probably already know: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie.../IriverInstall

That said, you could still diagnose your problem by reformatting to Iriver firmware--if it works you know the problem is with RockBox, not the H140. Conversely, if the problem persists with the Iriver firmware, you know you have a defective unit to return.

Yeah I had trouble with a recent rockbox build. I grabbed another one from mid April & it quit freezing. Mine would freeze after playing fine for an hour or so. So maybe try a different build from mid April & see if its better.

When I first installed rockbox it would lock up. Can't remember exactly what i did, but my recollection is there's two ways to install it. now maybe i installed a different version the second time, and maybe I didn't, but after getting it on there the second time, it stopped hanging. Now if only the remote would stop hanging.

guess what I'm trying to say is, hang in there, and try it again.

Recent builds are more stable than the builds from mid-April. The playback engine has recently been re-written, and bugs were introduced, and subsequently fixed, during that process. So, some of the April builds are buggy, but more recent builds should be fine.

Try the most recent build and see if it solves your problems:

For me it was crossfeed. I disabled crossfeed and the problem went away.

Same here, the crossfeed would cause mine to freeze up on earlier versions.
