The iRiver would be much cheaper for more SQ and less features. The H10 sounds slightly fuzzy around the edges, but otherwise it sounds nice and full. FYI I own the H10 but have only listened to the D2 for a bit.

I do not own a H10, but an IriverT30 and I personally do not like the SRS (surround sound)settings of the T30 and the general tone of the Iriver.

there are these "boosts" on the EQ that change the sound too much.

I own a D2 and I find it a more natural sound.
On EQ I only use the standards like Rock, Jazz,Classics, or User. With User I have 10 memory slots I can save and reload whenever it is I want a tweaked EQ to fit the music I am listening at that time.

there is also the Normal EQ which is "flat" at zero.

And if you want more there are Megabass,MPE,and 3-4 other settings available. You can also PAN the sound from left to right to compensate for deficient or "special" hearing!

I find I have much more choice in EQ and they are readily available, not much manipulation, just a few menus to go into.

They need some time to setup but once that is set, it's OK.

The frequencies can be tweaked too, but I did not play with them yet!

I think mostly it depends who's sitting between the earphones!

My taste goes for the D2 because it offers much more possibilities. Check on iaudiophile.net it's a forum dedicated to Cowon products. Or check anythingbutipod.com for more comments and reviews about the D2 and what it offers.

You will find your answers and reviews ...

regards,

I owned the H10 and currently own the D2. Didn't own them at the same time though. Both are great players to my ears, but the D2 tips the scale for me in other features. Sound quality issues are non-existent with either iRiver or iAudio IMO (owned 3 iRivers, 1 iAudio). They might have slight differences, it's just personal preference as to which one you like more, but I don't think one is necessarily 'better' than the other.

I think you should decide on the H10 or D2 on other features, you should get the one that suits your needs better (i.e. touchscreen or tactile buttons? flash or hdd? memory expansion or not? etc). Keep in mind that the H10 is a considerably older product than the D2.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

P.S. I am a member of both Misticriver (iRiver fansite) and iAudiophile (iAudio fansite) and I'm not a 'fanboy' of either brand, I'm just a fanboy of quality audio products, which iRiver and iAudio players fortunately are. In both forums there is enough discussion on the quality of the brand's products.

Okay, simple, short answer: both have good sound quality, but slightly different.

A decision solely on sound quality is nigh impossible without hearing and comparing both players yourself. Either will do. IMO.
