I found a computer here at NAS Whidbey Island, WA with mIRC installed. However, I can't seem to connect. I've tried every freaking EFNet server there is, but I always get the same error message "unable to resolve server". Any IRC gurus out there? I don't think there's a firewall on this network, but maybe there is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A firewall is likely blocking ident. Try irc.rt.ru and irc.prison.net. Or better yet, try a dalnet server just to see if it connects.

no... "Unable to resolve server" has to do with reaching the IRC server - you'll get a different message, later, if you can't get Ident.

¤•¤ dns: resolved irc.secsup.org to 63.98.19.242
¤•¤ dns: resolved efnet.demon.co.uk to 194.159.164.195
¤•¤ dns: resolved irc.Qeast.net to 206.167.75.78
¤•¤ dns: resolved irc.homelien.no to 195.159.0.90
¤•¤ dns: resolved irc.rt.ru to 217.106.2.90

try using the ip "numbers" above instead of the hostmask, i.e.:

/server 63.98.19.242 6667

plenty more listed on http://www.efnet.org/ircdb/servers.php if you need to try more.. also, a good question to ask is: can you at least view webpages on this computer?

Don't use IRC. It's evil. It's bad.

/me marks off his ... seventh? eighth? year of IRC from the calendar... I am hopelessly addicted for the rest of my life.

does sounds like an DNS issue but I assume you can surf the web okay..

is it a clean install? if not, go download the latest version and reinstall. make sure irc server list is okay.

it that still fails.. could be blocked. you could always opt for an web page client instead.

minya, i dont get irc. what's so great about it..

Ah, I guess I can't explain it. I've always loved the anonymity, the honesty, and the variety of communication that you can find via Internet Relay Chat.

I have found love (seriously), made best friends, and discovered more obscure, amazing music than I could ever, EVER possibly imagine via IRC.

But I've also missed out on a lot of other things because of it.

But I'm a strange person. It's a long story. But if you're not addicted to IRC, be thankful.
