Ipod's - does it matter which one you use when using an LOD and amplifier?

Hi all,

I think I have a simple question that someone might be able to answer.

When using the Ipod line out to a dedicated headphone amp, does it matter which Ipod you have? Does getting an ipod classic/touch/nano make any difference? Do they have different DAC chips that make the choice important.

I ask because I'm probably going to get a new nano for exercising, and would like to know if the line out would be different than a 3rd generation touch or even a current gen ipod classic.

Any input would be great!

For interest sake I'm thinking of getting either a TTJV Slim, RSA Predator or Pico DAC/AMP to power my RE-262s. I also have TF10s and some HD 25-I IIs.

Cheers.

the 7th Gen has a Cirus DAC chip which is inferior to the previous Wolfson DAC chip generations.
that's about it.

another wolfson fanboy, tell me where it is better please? Actually the wolfson chip has a high frequency roll off if anything. The latest classic is one of the best sounding as the route from DAC to HP out is very clean. And using a LOD is very clean sounding. The 6th G classic is not too good, and the 5 and 5.5G are only good if you are going to imod them, the HP out is terrible and the LO is pretty bad too.

like the other two have more or less noted

yes.

an LOD JUST bypasses the ipod's internal amp and headphone jack circuitry which muddies the signal. whatever DAC is used in it changes the sound....for most people it matters little. one, most people don't have a cirrus logic(current) and a old wolfson ipod to compare with to tell the difference. just like when u were usign ipod earbuds. when u have never heard anything different. you won't know..really the cirrus logic move was a good one really for Apple and the 99.9999% of the people of the world(the.9999 is overexagerated but you know what i mean)

thanks guys. so there seems to be a lot of knowledge out there about the ipod classic. given that everyone is probably playing ALACs, the big hard drive makes sense for most audiophiles.

but how about the difference between the nano to the classic/touch? will it sound very different putting the line out signal from a nano (current or previous) than an ipod touch/classic (current or previous)? I'm wondering if an ipod nano will suffice for my requirement of  a line out signal. or if i should get a bigger ipod (that has a ?better? dac chip)?

I ask because I can't really imagine running half marathons with an ipod classic strapped to myself, but i might run with an ipod touch... however if the ipod nano puts out the same signal as the ipod touch/classic, then i wont need to buy any of the latter at all!

thanks in advance.

that's a good question. google might have it. but i've also wondered if teh DAC in the nano was teh same as an ipod touch and or classics many times before. it should be...but then agin. who knows

Here's some information on the chips used in each ipod, however it's only one persons opinion, they do seem pretty confident.
